Project Background (On Tuesday, 28th November 2023, and at the request of Bamzee Construction Company Ld, the team conducted geotechnical investigations for the Proposed Construction of Green Field Switching Station in Matugga, Wakiso District. The feld work was followed by geotechnical laboratory testing ofthe sampled materials and reporting ofthe investigation results. This report provides the relevant geotechnical information forthe Proposed Station. ‘The investigation was carried out in accordance with BS 5930: 2015 and other relevant standafds as cited in the remaining parts of the report. This report considers the Client particular instructions and requirements and so it should not be used for purposes other than the design ofthe above Proposed Station, ‘There was no subsurface exploration information avaled and therefore it was assumed ‘that this report entals the first ever investigation executed on the proposed ste, 41.2. Main Objective ‘To determine the stratigraphic characteristics of the site based on field and laboratory tests, 4.3. Site Geology ‘The district landscape belongs to Buganda surface classifcatior. It les at an approximate range of about 900 to 1340 meters above sea level The ditt fs characterized by isolated flattopped hls with steep slopes, often merging abruptly into long and gentle pediments, which are usually dissected by relatively broad valleys. Woakiso district is vided into two main topographic zones, the Lake Victoria zone and the high and zone (contra and north hls). “The mote highly metamorphosed rocks include quartaites, muscovite-tisite gnesses, and subordinate schist, which may locally contain corderte. The above rocks, together with amphiboles and epidosites, re part of the Buganda series, which make up a wider ‘Buganda- Toro system withthe Toro series of Western Uganda (Schleter, 1997), The geological map of Uganda presented in Figure 23 The sols were majy consisting of laterite rosiual sols of fine grains atthe top layers, underlain by coarse grained soil ‘material with sight races of cobbles onthe lower side of the ste ‘015-11292023 | GHOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION REPORT Page 4{i7 Legend iver meters cies he Aron set cree Compe tv it sents iB ere stim ote aw Ses oD ienteaon Sym EE Lm de medin e Kae Naakonsp on [tient mae Kyer Sn [EE Ce in (oth tems ‘ee baton Sach emi Figure 24: Modified Geological Map of Uganda 225, Ground Type for the Definition for Selsmie Action ‘Based on the seismic zoning of Uganda, the site is located within Zore 3 as shown in Figure 2.4 below and the site sub-sol is a Type Ill soft soll sits in accordance with Ugandan Standard US319:2008 (Selamic code of practice for structural desis) ‘Thus, the seismic zoning factor, Z = 0.7 for zone 3. Fld Exploratory ‘The fold exploratory activities were conducted in accordance with BS $930: 1999 "Code of Practice for Site Investigations" and included excavation of three test pits, logging, sampling (disturbed and Undisturbed samples), monitoring of ground water and conducting DCP tests. Dynamic cone penetrometer Test (OCP). ‘The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (OCP) test was carried out within the excavated test pits in order to determine the bearing capacity ofthe founding so. The DCP consisted of «2 cone of 800 fixed fo the botiom ofa vertical rod. A weight of kg was repeatedly lifted ‘and dropped onto a coupling at mid-heightof the red to deliver a standerd impactor blow to the cone and drove it nto the sol (at a 675mm dropping height). A vertical scale alongside the rod was used to measure the depth of penetration of the cone. The Penetraton per blow “penetration rate" was recorded as the cone was being don int the soll and then used to calculate the strength ofthe sol through which it was passing. A change in penetration rate indicated a change in strength between the soi layers, thus allowing stength ofthe sol to be determined. Figure 3.2 shows @ technician conducting the DOP test at some ofthe exploratory points. OCP and bearing capacty test results re ltached in Appendices 8 & 4 respectively. Figure 3.2: Dep Tests at surface and within the Pits respectively 3.4.3. Ground Water Table Ground water was encountered in TP 02 at @ Depth of 1.0m. The water was removed a8, the pit was excavated up to a depth of 1.5m. The Pit was lft for 2s for water ‘accumulation and the depth was measured fromthe ground surface. Evaluation of bearing Capacity using DCP Results ‘The maximum pressures the sols are capable of resisting have been estimated from the field N- values using empirical relations. Therefore, the resulting bearhg capacities are suited for scheme design and not detail design. For purposes of computing the sols bearing capacty, the folowing assumptions were made; ‘+The Peck et ats (1967) relationship between N-values and unconfned compressive ‘strength is vai ‘+ The maximum alowable settement in non-cohesive sol is 25mm, ‘These evaluations are in accordance with "A Guide to Practkal Geotechnical Engineering in Southern Afica: 1995’. The Summary of DCP resus (penetration per blow! penetration rate) and the allowable bearing capacities for all tal pis are ehown in ‘Appendix 4. Tables 3-2 and 3-3 below show bearing capacities and censistency of soils at ferent depths fr each pit Table 3-2: Summary of Bearing Capacities from 0.0m to 2.0m ‘The allowable bearing Capacity generally varies with depth as presented in Table 2-2 and Table 3.3. tt generally vatid from 45,3 KPa to 528.4 KPa from 0.0 - 2.0m on the Upper sie ofthe sit and 40.7 KPa to 143.7 KPa onthe lower side of he st, ‘The bearing capacities ofthe upperside of the site generally varied frm 45.5 kPa to 120, KPa and lower side from 173.0 KPa to-264.7 kPa from depth 1.5m to 25m, a '015-11282023 | GHOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION REPORT Page 9117 Table 33: Summary of Bearing Capacities from 1.5m te 2.6m 3.2.
