Chapter 6 Measure of Correlation

The document discusses correlation and correlation coefficients. It defines correlation as a statistical tool that measures the association between two quantitative variables and the extent to which points cluster around a straight line. Correlation coefficients range from -1 to +1, with positive values indicating an increasing relationship and negative values a decreasing relationship. Positive correlation occurs when both variables increase or decrease together, while negative correlation occurs when one variable increases as the other decreases. The document also provides a interpretation range for correlation coefficients.

Measure of

Correlation

By: LLOYD PSYCHE T. BALTAZAR

Measure of Correlation
➢It is a statistical tool used to measure the
association of two quantitative variables.

➢It is concerned with the relationship in the

change and movements of two variables.

➢It measures the extent to which the

points cluster about a straight line.
Measure of Correlation

➢It is also defined as the measure of the

linear relationship between two
random variables x and y.

➢It measures the extent to which the

points cluster about a straight line.
Measure of Correlation
➢Correlation coefficients vary from -1 to
+1.

➢The positive values indicate an

increasing relationship.

➢The negative values indicate a

decreasing relationship.
Measure of Correlation
Positive Correlation is said to occur
when:
➢ there is an increase in the values of the
first variable as the values of the second
variable increase.

➢there is a decrease in the values of the

first variable as the values of the second
variable decrease.
Measure of Correlation

Negative Correlation is said to occur

when:

➢ there is an increase in the values of the

first variable as the values of the second
variable decrease (or vice versa).

Range Interpretation

±1.00 Perfect Correlation

±0.91 to ±0.99 Very high positive/ negative correlation
±0.71 to ±0.90 High positive/ negative correlation
±0.51 to ±0.70 Moderately positive/ negative correlation
±0.31 to ±0.50 Low positive/ negative correlation
±0.01 to ±0.30 Slight correlation, negligible positive/ negative correlation
0 No correlation
Measure of Correlation

Pearson r correlation is widely used in

statistics to measure the degree of the
relationship between linear related variables.
It is also known as The Pearson Product-
Moment Correlation Coefficient.
