ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Praise be to the Almighty Allah ta’ala, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, who showers
me His abundant blessings, guidance, patience, and strength to complete this term paper entitled
‘Dynamic Translation of Danielle Steel’s A Perfect Life Novel: An Annotated Translation’. This
term-paper is submitted in part-fulfilling for obtaining Strata One (S-1) degree in English
Department, Darma Persada University.
Deciding to move to English Department in the second semester of my study in Unsada
cannot be a nicer step I take. Studying in English Department has given me many incredible things
that I’m so thankful of and could not ask for more: knowledge, friendship, experience, and
unforgettable memories. All things are valuable and priceless for me. Finishing this term paper has
been one of my last steps in this university and I want to express my sincerest thanks to people
who involve in this three-and-a-half-year journey:
1. Tommy Andrian, SS, M.Hum, as the advisor of this term paper, the Head of English
Department, my academic advisor, the inspiring lecturer of my favorite subjects, for
willingly giving me his time, sharing his valuable knowledge to help me finishing this term
paper, for all his sarcastic comments of the mistakes I make that precisely encourage me
to learn more and move further, and for patiently answering my not-so-important questions
outside the class. The five-minute discussions we have have always been helping me to
comprehend more and more;
2. Juliansyah, S.Pd, M.Pd, as the reader of this term paper, for giving me his time and
checking this term paper, for being one of the loveliest lecturers in the class, for making
me and other students laugh and have joy in his class. Even though he always gives us
many complicated tasks, his class is the one I do not want to miss;
3. Fridolini, SS, M.Hum, as the Chairperson of Examiners, for being very lovely and sweet
during the term paper defense, and for the valuable knowledge she shares to me especially
about Semantics study which helps me with conducting this term paper;
4. Nurul Fitriani, SS, M.Hum, as one of the loveliest lecturers I have met so far, who I also
call ‘Miss. Panutan Q’, for suggesting me many references to conduct this term paper, for
being someone I can ask to discuss with while conducting this term paper, and for another
priceless help she offers;

5. All amazing lecturers in English Department of Darma Persada University whose names I
cannot mention one by one, but it does not lack any of my respects to express how lucky I
am to have been taught by them during my study;
6. My family; my mom, Puri Irriwani, who endlessly supports every single decision I make
in life without any hesitation and tries everything to help me reach my dream, even though
I once failed the decision I made; my dad, my first love and number one hero, who becomes
the main reasons for every single step I take, for every path I make, for every strength I
get, who watches me and also supports my decisions from the Hereafter.; The Purimas;
Stephanie Purimas, as my elder sister and also my biggest fan in life; Bella Purimas, my
sweet and lovely sister who accompanies me conducting this term paper in the coffee shops
and asks me to pay her bills; and Putra Purimas, my little and only lovely brother;
7. My closest friends Riega Setyanagari, Megawati Yuni Putrie, and Syadza Zuwisa, for
patiently accompanying me conducting this term paper, trustfully believing in me, and
making me know that I will always have shoulders to rely and cry on;
8. My amazing The Linguisticlicious and 2013 mates; Cindy Aulia, Zulfikar Irfan, Imelda
Tripuspita, Dwi Nur Arfani, Gilang Ahmad Rizky, M. Harits, Intan Fitria, Ade Setiawati,
Herfauzi, Talitha Umaya, Tania Anindita, Wina Christiani, Annisha Ode, Arga Wibowo,
for filling my days with joys and fun, and also for helping each other during the struggles
we have in the classes; 2014 Class B mates, who are lovely classmates when I took subjects
with their classes; My another loveliest fellow Unsada-nese: Inez Nur Irawan, Izniatih,
Nurul Rizky, Arti Layali, Hanum, Dede Iskandar Rianzi who encourage and support me
while studying in Unsada and conducting this term paper.
Nobody is perfect. Therefore, I warmly welcome suggestions and constructive critics. This
term paper is hopefully expected to be able to contribute to any linguistics studies, specifically to
translation studies.

ABSTRACT

Name : Sylvia Purimas

Program of Study : English Language and Literature
The Title : Dynamic Translation in Danielle Steel’s
A Perfect Life Novel: An Annotated Translation

Translation not only is seen as something static, but also as something dynamic. An
annotated translation is a translation which is supported by annotations or notes or explanations in
order to deliver logical reasons for the equivalence chosen. An annotated translation also aims to
be the translator’s responsibility for the translation he or she has done. An annotated translation is
done by applying the theories of translation including methods and techniques. This term paper
discusses about the translation of the words, phrases, and idioms found in Danielle Steel’s A
Perfect Life Novel. Due to the different cultures between source language and target language,
those words, phrases, and idioms cannot be translated explicitly. Therefore, methods and
techniques of translation such as contextual conditioning, idiomatic, communicative, and
paraphrase are used in conducting this annotated translation.

Keywords: translation, an annotated translation, techniques

A Perfect life’ karya Danielle
Steel. Karena perbedaan budaya antara Bahasa sumber dan Bahasa sasaran, kata, frasa, dan
idiom yang ditemukan tidak bisa diterjemahkan secara eksplisit. Oleh sebab itu, metode-metode
dan teknik-teknik terjemahan seperti penjelasan tambahan, idiom, komunikatif, dan parafrasa
digunakan dalam meyusun terjemahan beranotasi ini.
