Assignment

This document contains a 10 question physics assignment given to first year B.Tech students at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka. The assignment covers topics in special relativity, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, photoelectric effect, and scattering experiments. Students are asked to show calculations and derive equations related to Lorentz transformations, wavefunction normalization, particle in a box potentials, light pressure, Bragg reflection, electric potential, photon wavelengths, electromagnetic wave properties, classical and quantum probabilities, and Compton scattering experiments. The assignment is due on December 12, 2023 at 5pm and was issued on December 2, 2023.

1. Show that two successive Lorentz transformations

are again a Lorentz transformation and hence deduce
velocity transformation rule in the special theory of
relativity
2
2. Normalize the wavefunction e−ax
3. Solve particle in a box for a symmetric potential v=0
for −L
2 ≤ x≤ 2
L

4. The intensity of sunlight hitting the earth is about

1300W/m2 . If sunlight strikes a perfect absorber,
what pressure does it exert? How about a perfect re-
flector? What fraction of atmospheric pressure does
it amount to?
5. A single crystal of table salt (NaCl) is irradiated with
a beam of X-rays of wavelength 0.250 nm, and the
first Bragg reflection is observed at an angle of 26.3
degrees. What is the atomic spacing of NaCl? Write
your answer correctly up to three decimal places in
units of nm.
6. Two charges +q and 3q are separated by a distance
of 1 meter. At what points on its axis is the electric
potential zero?

7. The threshold wavelength for photoelectric emission
in tungsten is 230 nm. What wavelength of light
must be used in order for electrons to be emitted
with a maximum KE of 8.5 eV? (Write your answer
by taking the value of hc=1240eVnm. ).
8. Show that electromagnetic wave is a transverse wave
and derive the relation between the amplitude of
electric and magnetic fields.
9. What is the classical probability of a free particle
trapped in a one-dimensional box of length L. Show
that when n is very large, the quantum mechanical
probability goes to the classical limit
10. Is it possible to determine the rest mass energy of
the electron by a Compton scattering experiment?
If your answer is yes, how will you design such an
experiment?
