LCH1005 English for Academic Studies (Business) I

Semester One 2023/24


Individual Assignment: Research Essay (30% Individual)

This assessment task is designed to assess your ability in using English


effectively in academic contexts that you will encounter in your studies. You
will complete a series of tasks including researching information, drafting an
outline and writing an academic essay.

Expected Learning Outcomes:


Research Skills
• Conduct library and Internet research and integrate ideas from multiple sources
(e.g. newspaper articles and book chapters) to support your points.
• Document information from multiple sources using APA, an established
documentation style.

Writing Skills
• Plan, organize, and structure an academic essay.
• Write a research essay using the process approach.
• Write well-structured paragraphs using the topic-sentence-supporting-details
structure.
• Paraphrase, summarize, and quote different reference sources (e.g. newspaper
articles and book chapters).
• Edit and revise the essay for support, organization and sentence skills.
• Demonstrate appropriate use of grammar and vocabulary.

Your Task:
Write a 5-paragraph cause-effect essay of 600-650 words.

Note: The word count should include the essay title and the 5 paragraphs (including all the
in-text citations). Marks may be deducted if the word count shown in the Turnitin
report falls out of the above range, and excessive words will not be read and marked.

Your essay should be relevant to the business field*and it should have implications
for Hong Kong.

*From a broad perspective, “business” means any activities about commerce,


related to trading, money transaction, marketing, merchandising, human resources
(staffing), goods and services, management, ethics, competitiveness or operation of a
company, etc.

You should choose ONE broad topic area from the list below:

• Hotels and Tourism
• Financial Services
• Professional and Producer services
• Innovation and Technology
• Cultural and Creative industries

After choosing a broad topic area, you should think about your specific topic.
For instance, you may investigate:
• The successful reasons of tourism industry in Hong Kong (Hotels and
Tourism)
• The positive effects of ChatGPT on public relations industry
(Professional and Producer Services)
• The negative effects of advanced technology on publishing field
(Cultural and Creative Industries)

Requirements concerning Reference Sources:


• All the reference sources must be in English.
• At least THREE references from DIFFERENT sources should be cited in
the essay.
• Only references from reliable sources are accepted. Reliable sources: books,

journals, newspapers, magazines, government and institutional websites.
• Attach the copies of ANY THREE text-based reference sources. On each
copy, write down the author-date citation information and highlight the
parts that you have quoted, paraphrased or summarized.

• Summarize or paraphrase the supporting materials as far as possible. Direct


quotations should not exceed 10% of the total length of your essay. The
APA citation style (APA 7 th Edition Basics) should be correctly used to
document sources of reference in your essay.

• Your essay should be word-processed and submitted via Turnitin (Times New
Roman, font size 12).
• You must write your own work. Disciplinary action will be taken if a student
is found plagiarizing other writers’ ideas/ words or using AI-generated contents
(e.g. ChatGPT, Grammarly, etc.). Plagiarizing other student’s work within/
across the subject groups is also NOT allowed and Turnitin will help check
for plagiarism of all kinds. So, prior to your submission of the essay, you MUST
sign the “Declaration of Original Work” indicating that the essay you have
completed is your original work. The signed declaration must be submitted with
your research essay.
