It can be used to solve a problem of any magnitude, from the incredibly simple to the absurdly complicated. From GCSE onwards I have acquired a strong interest in Mathematics and my curiosity in the subject multiplies as I learn more. Mathematical problems are like mysteries, and I enjoy the sense of gratification when I solve them. A-Level has been very enjoyable, specifically the topic of differentiation. The fact that the gradient of any point on a curve, something I would have once assumed complex, can be discovered through such simple formulae intrigued me. Studying Mathematics at university appeals to me not only because I am enjoying it so much at A-level, but also because I would like to indulge in the fascinating theories behind the methods. During A-level, I have covered both Pure Mathematics and Statistics. Whilst taking pleasure in both, I am undeniably more inclined to Pure Mathematics as this is the root of every branch of Mathematics. I am fascinated by the ubiquity of Mathematics, which is why I am currently reading a publication by Marcus du Sautoy, Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University, to discover more. The Number Mysteries is an insight into how fundamental to the operation of society Mathematics is, how mathematical systems lie behind more ambiguous processes and situations; somehow du Sautoy manages to prove that the key to Real Madrid Football Club's success is prime numbers. My other subjects include an Engineering A-level and a National Certificate in ICT Practitioners Software Development, both of which I enjoy. Engineering relates effectively to Mathematics as the sole basis of engineering is to apply scientific and mathematical principles to practical operations in order to solve problems. This correlation between the subjects is the reason why I enjoy engineering. ICT is one of my strengths together with Mathematics and I have particularly benefited from the technical side of the subject; notably the disassembly of a base unit to eradicate an issue, as it has enhanced my problem solving skills. The abilities of independent thinking and problem solving which I have gained in abundance from both Engineering and ICT have aided my progress in A-level Mathematics, and would, I believe, continue to aid me throughout university and into a future career. In my spare time, I like to play a positive role in society and I have been regularly volunteering for Barnardos childrens charity, an experience that has encouraged me to realise my fortunate life situation. Furthermore it has enriched me, helping me gain confidence whilst improving my array of skills; guiding the newer volunteers has given me a sense of leadership and participating in fundraising events has augmented my team-working capabilities. These are all faculties that I know will be enormously beneficial to my progress at university. During my AS year, I have been assisting Year 11 students with their Mathematics exam preparation and I will continue to do this for forthcoming exam periods. Aside from helping the community, another of my hobbies is puzzle-solving, particularly Sudoku. The level of concentration required improves my ability to focus, and this combined with the need for perseverance enhances my efforts in my studies. I am looking forward to the academic challenges awaiting me at university, and I will make certain that I utilise university life in the greatest possible way in order to pursue a desired career in Mathematics. I know that my experience at A-level, understanding of the subject, dedication and resilience will allow me to succeed in my degree.
