Project Quanta

Quantum computers use quantum mechanics and qubits that can represent a 1 and 0 simultaneously to perform calculations exponentially faster than classical computers. This will allow for more accurate molecular simulations and analysis of vast amounts of medical data for applications like precision medicine, drug discovery, DNA sequencing and analysis, and highly secure medical data systems. While still early, quantum computers show promise to revolutionize healthcare by enabling personalized diagnosis and treatment, accelerating medical research, and providing stronger data protections.

Quantum computers and their application in healthcare

The world beyond what we see definitely behaves way differently than what we perceive.

What is quantum theory in a nutshell?

Quantum mechanics explains the nature and behavior of atoms and sub-atomic particles.

The quantum theory is based on representing electrons as waves called a wave function which is not
physically real.

The idea of superposition, where a quantum is able to be in two or more positions simultaneously is the
game changer for quantum computers.

What are quantum computers?

Quantum computers are way different from ordinary computers. ordinary computers function on what is
known as ‘bits’ whose value lies either as 0 or 1.

Whereas a quantum computer is made of quantum bits or ‘qubits’ which can simultaneously hold the
values both 1 and 0.

Ordinary computers are restricted to certain linear functioning whereas a quantum computer can allow
itself to work around these restrictions.

The need for quantum computers arises as our ordinary computers become smaller and smaller but the
‘physical restrictions’ do not allow it to span any further without something revolutionary.

These physical restrictions hint towards the inability of computers to be able to simulate even larger
molecules with accuracy.

Today we know more than 10^7 organic and inorganic molecules but it is predicted that there is more
than 10^60. Quantum computers will be able to help us predict these structures by providing accurate
simulations of these structures in the future.

Now, quantum computers are not built to replace classical computers. Unlike classical computers,
quantum computers have the exceptional ability to find correlations between data and are meant to
work alongside classical computers.

Applications in healthcare:

Precision medicine:

Precision medicine focuses on meeting the individual needs of patients. Classical diagnosis which is
based on the symptoms that a person suffers may fail. Quantum computers with their impressive ability
to analyze huge amounts of data in a short while along with personal interventions will help in improving
diagnosis and provide required treatments.

Drug research and discovery:

Quantum computing enables medical practitioners to model atomic-level molecular interactions, which is
necessary for medical research. This will be particularly essential for diagnosis, treatment, drug
discovery, and analytics. Due to the advancements in quantum computing, it is now possible to encode
tens of thousands of proteins and simulate their interactions with drugs, which has not been possible
before
Sequencing and analyzing DNA full speed

Genomics and analyzing DNA has grown exponentially in the last 50 years. Although the technical
conditions, the time, and the cost of sequencing genomes were reduced by a factor of 1 million in less
than 10 years, the revolution lags behind. quantum computers will provide a faster analysis.

Creating the safest medical data systems

Data protection is one of the most fundamental requirements in medical technology and
quantum computers will be able to create encryptions that are even stronger than classical
computer encryptions. They would have to break the laws of quantum physics to hack such
keys.

Conclusion:

We are still having a long way ahead of us to be able to use quantum computers to their
maximum potential. They are currently in their beginning stages but will be creating major
developments in medical as well as other scientific fields once they are in full swing.
