Activity5 Absolute Maximum and Absolute Minimum Values of A Function
Activity5 Absolute Maximum and Absolute Minimum Values of A Function
MATERIAL REQUIRED
▪ A drawing board
▪ A white paper sheet
▪ Board pins, pencil and scale
METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
➢ Take the drawing board and place it on the table.
➢ Fix the white paper sheet on it with the help of board pins.
➢ Draw two perpendicular lines X'OX and YOY` intersecting at O. X'OX is 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 and YOY is 𝑦 −
𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠. Graduate these axes.
➢ Take the function 𝑓(𝑥) = (4𝑥 2 − 9)(𝑥 2 − 1) on the interval [−2,2]
➢ Take different values of 𝑥 on [−2,2] and find the corresponding values of 𝑓(𝑥) and plot these
ordered pairs [𝑥, 𝑓(𝑥)] as shown in the figure.
DEMONSTRATION
Some ordered pairs are as given below:
𝒙 0 ±0.5 ±1.0 ±1.25 ±1.27 ±1.5 ±2
𝒇(𝒙) 9 6 0 -1.55 -1.56 0 21
Plot these points on the white paper sheet and join them by free-hand curve, see the figure.
OBSERVATION
➢ Study the full graph and find the maximum value of f(x) on [-2,2]
➢ The absolute maximum value of 𝑓(𝑥) is 21 at x = ±2 .
➢ The absolute minimum value of f(x) is -1.56 at 𝑥 = 1.27
APPLICATION
This activity can be used to explain the concept of absolute maximum/minimum values of a function.
NOTES:
𝑓(𝑥) = (4𝑥 2 − 9)(𝑥 2 − 1)
⇒ (4𝑥 2 − 9)(𝑥 2 − 1)=0
𝑥 = ±3/2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 = ±1
All these 4 values of x lie in the closed interval [−𝟐, 𝟐]
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 2𝑥(8𝑥 2 − 12) = 0
𝑥 = 0 and 𝑥 = ±1.27
These three values also lie in [−𝟐, 𝟐]
So, the function has local maximum/minimum at 𝒙 = 𝟎 and 𝒙 = ±𝟏. 𝟐𝟕 respectively.
