Title Toolbox Talks

Purpose
A full and thorough toolbox talk is essential to support our vision of safe, effective and trouble-free operations.
The talk allows the people who will be involved in any task to be sufficiently aware of their responsibilities in
carrying out the task, identify the hazards associated with each individual step and agree suitable control methods
for each hazard. The toolbox talk is one of the last lines of defence from injury or incident therefore it has to be a
structured risk focused discussion on the ways to address the hazards that are present in each step of the task.
Requirements

1.0 Execution

1.1 A toolbox talk shall be held before starting any task. This covers the following:
a. All tasks with an associated work guideline or rig crew instruction or documented risk assessments
b. Lifting operations
c. All tasks that require a PTW
d. Any task that could significantly affect other people or concurrent activities
e. Where people involved in the same task will be working in different locations e.g. between decks
1.2 Lone working shall be subject to a toolbox talk / TRIC with the Senior KCA DEUTAG Onsite Representative
or Line Supervisor
1.3 Every person who is to take part in the task shall attend the toolbox talk including subcontractors and third
party contractors
1.4 To assist planning and preparation for the task, the toolbox talk leader shall confirm:
a. The availability of correct work guidelines, lifting plans, permit to work documentation and risk
assessments at the worksite
b. The checks and preparations necessary for equipment prior to use are carried out
c. The competencies of the people involved
1.5 The toolbox talk will include verbal outline of individual steps in the task as described in the Work
Guideline/Instruction. Individual steps shall be outlined using active verbs (such as disconnect, check,
assemble etc.)
1.6 The toolbox talk team shall then identify the hazards associated with each individual step and shall agree
suitable control methods for each hazard. Long and/or complex tasks shall be subject to planned Time Out for
Safety (Planned TOFS). Planned TOFS and any subsequent changes to the task shall be recorded in the
section provided on the TRIC
1.7 The toolbox talk leader shall confirm everyone attending the toolbox talk has understood what has been
discussed and agreed through the use of open questions (e.g. what is your role in this task?)
1.8 If at any time during the task a person feels that the task is unsafe or has changed from the plan agreed at
the toolbox talk then they are required to call a Time Out for Safety (Unplanned TOFS) and Stop the task.
The reason for Unplanned TOFS shall be recorded in the section provided on the TRIC
1.9 The TRIC shall be discussed with anyone joining the work group later (e.g. a roustabout relieving a colleague
on the drill floor during a break period)
