Lab 5 - Sampling Theorem 2023 - 24

This document summarizes a lab experiment on sampling theory. The objectives were to simulate sampling a sinusoid using MATLAB, plot the sampled signal for different sampling frequencies, and observe the frequency spectrum. The minimum sampling frequency to avoid aliasing was determined to be 20 Hz, twice the signal frequency of 10 Hz. When the sampling frequency was below this rate, aliasing distorted the signal but frequencies at or above it recovered the original signal shape.

1.0 OBJECTIVES

1. To simulate the sampling of a sinusoid using MATLAB.

2. To plot the sampled sinusoid based on the specific sampling frequency.
3. To observe the frequency spectrum of the sampled signal.

2.0 EQUIPMENT

MATLAB® software.

3.0 SYNOPSIS& THEORY

A continuous time signal can be represented in its samples and can be recovered
back when sampling frequency fs is greater than or equal to the twice the highest
frequency component of message signal, fm. i. e.:

f s ≥2 f m

If the sampling frequency (fs) equals twice the input signal frequency (fm), then
such a condition is called the Nyquist Criteria for sampling. When sampling
frequency equals twice the input signal frequency is known as “Nyquist rate”.

f s=2 f m

If the sampling frequency (fs) is less than twice the input signal frequency, such
criteria called an Aliasing effect.

f s <2 f m

6.0 QUESTION & DISCUSSION

1. Based on the experiment, what is the minimum sampling frequency to

avoid aliasing?
- 20 Hz

2. Discuss the results based on your observation.

- Based on our observation when the sampling frequency is

less than the signal frequency, the output for magnitude is
not a normal signal because of the aliasing effect on the
signal above. Then, when sampling frequency is greater or
equals twice the input signal, the output for mangnitude is
appear to the normal signal.
7.0 CONCLUSION

- In conclusion, we know how to simulate the sampling of a

sinusoid using the MATLAB. After that, we know how to plot
the sampled sinusoid based on the specific sampling
frequency for example change the 400Hz to 8Hz, 10Hz,
20Hz, 80Hz and 100Hz to see the differents of the output.
Lastly, we managed to observe the frequency spectrum of
the sampled signal.
