2.2. Network Devices and Materials I’m used

During my technical task: I observed and learned the usage of different networking materials and
procedures during network design.
The materials I have using during field practice are listed below with their functions.

2.2.1. Rack
In the context of computer networking and data centre infrastructure, a rack refers to a standardized
framework or structure used to mount and organize various network components and equipment. It provides
a secure and organized platform for housing servers, switches, routers, storage devices, and other networking
equipment.

Figure 1 Rack
2.2.2. Switch
A switch, in the context of computer networking, is a network device that connects multiple devices on a
local area network (LAN). It receives data packets from connected devices and forwards them to the
appropriate destination device within the network. Switches are a fundamental component of modern
computer networks, enabling efficient and reliable data communication within LANs. They provide
connectivity, improve network performance, and offer network administrators control over network traffic
and security.

5
Figure 2 Switch
2.3. Cable Trunk Line
A cable trunk line, also known as a trunk cable or backbone cable, refers to a high-capacity cable that serves
as the main communication pathway in a network infrastructure. It is typically used to connect major
network components, such as switches, routers, or distribution points, over longer distances.

Figure 3 Cable Trunk Line

2.4. Physical connections

Cable networks are hardware materials used for connecting network devices together such as routers to
switches, computers to switches…etc. There are many kinds of network cables used to connect devices.
Such cables include optical fiber, coaxial and twisted pair cable. These cables differ from each other in terms
of cost of the network, way to install, the distance between devices, and speed.

2.4.1. Fiber optical cable

Fibber optic cable, also known as optical fibre cable or simply fibre cable is a type of high-speed data
transmission medium made of thin strands of glass or plastic fibres. It is widely used in telecommunications
and networking to transmit data over long distances with high bandwidth and low signal loss.

6
Figure 4 Fibber optical cable

2.5. Twisted pair cables

Twisted pair cables are quite literally a pair of insulated wires that are twisted together to help reduce noise
from outside sources. There are two types of twisted pair cables

2.5.1. Unshielded twisted pair (UTP)

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) is a widely used type of cabling for networking and telecommunications
applications. It is the most common type of Ethernet cable used in LAN installations. UTP cables consist
of multiple pairs of twisted copper wires, with no additional shielding layer.

Figure 5 Unshielded twisted pair (UTP)

2.5.2. Shielded twisted pair (STP)

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) is a type of cabling commonly used in network installations to reduce
electromagnetic interference (EMI) and crosstalk. It is similar to Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) but
with an additional shielding layer to provide better protection against external electromagnetic signals.

7
Figure 6 Shielded twisted pair (STP)

2.6. Arrangement of cable

There are two kinds of connection used for connecting devices together. The connection depends on the
nature of device used. Those connection are crossover wired cables and straight through cable connection.

2.6.1. Straight Through Cable

We used this cable to connect different type of network devices where the pins order on one end follows the
568A pinning order and the other end of the cable follows the same 568A pinning order.

This is used to connect:-

 Routers with switch

 Computers with switch
 Switch with hub

8
2.6.2. Cross over cable
We use this cable to connect the same type of network devices where the pins order on one end follows the
568a pinning order and the other end of the cable follows the 568b pinning order. That means connecting
two pieces of equipment that have the same pin edge on both ports such as connecting:-

 Two computers
 Two routers
 Two switch
 Two personal computers

Figure 7 : Cross over cable

2.7. Materials required to install LAN & dispatched

There various materials are there to install local area network (LAN) those are:-

 Hammer
 Fisher 6 & 12
 Screw 6 & 12
 Plaster shera
 Hacksaw Frame
 Hacksaw Blade
 Glue
 Drill Bit 6 & 12
9
 Puncher
 Brush
 Cable tie
 Conduit
 Patch panel
 Patch cord
 Crimper

From this material practically I see only how crimper is work.

2.7.1. Crimper

A crimping tool is a tool designed to crimp or connect a connector to the end of a cable. For example,
network cables and phone cables are created using a crimping tool to connect the RJ-45 and RJ-11
connectors to the end of the cable.

Figure 8 : Crimper

Puncher: -is an instrument used to punch network cable in the header or patch panel.

10
Trunk: - used for the UTP cable safety.

Wall-outlet/Node

 A node is either a redistribution point.

 Data communications equipment, or communication endpoint

RJ-45: - A registered jack (RJ) is a standardized physical network interface for connecting
telecommunications or data equipment.

Unshielded twisted pair (UTP)

 UTP cable is certainly the most popular type of network cable on the world
 The characteristics of UTP are very good and make it easy to work with, install, expand
and troubleshoot.

11
An optical fiber cable: - Also known as fiber optic cable is an assembly similar to an electrical
cable, but containing one or more optical fibers that are used to carry light.

 The optical fiber elements are typically individually coated with plastic layers
 Long distance telecommunication, or

12
Fischer screw: This is inserted loosely into a drilled hole, then a screw is tightened
into the center. As the screw enters the plug, the soft material of the plug expands
conforming tightly to the wall material.

Screw: - The most common uses of screws are to hold objects together such as wall and trunk.

Drilling machine: we are used drilling machine to drill the wall.

Cutter: - is used to cut unneeded part of cable.

13
Steps to Crimp UTP Cable in RJ_45
RJ45 is a type of connector commonly used for Ethernet networking. It looks similar to a
telephone jack, but is slightly wider. Since Ethernet cables have an RJ45 connector on each end,
Ethernet cables are sometimes also called RJ45 cables. This RJ45 has Step to Crimped:-

Step_1 cut the cable by the cutter

Step 2 strip cable ends

Step 3 untwist wire ends

Step 4 arrange wires

Step 5 trim wires to size

Step 6 attach connector

Step 7 check

Step 8 crimp

Step 9 test

2.9. Steps of Cable Crimping

Using a Crimping Tool

Strip the cable back 1 inch (25 mm) from the end. Insert the cable into the stripper section of
the tool and squeeze it tight. Then, rotate the crimping tool around the cable in a smooth and
even motion to create a clean cut. Keep the tool clamped and pull away towards the end of the
wire to remove the sheathing.

14
Untwist and straighten the wires inside of the cable. Inside of the cable you’ll see a bunch of
smaller wires twisted together. Separate the twisted wires and straighten them out so they’re
easier to sort into the right order.

Arrange the wires into the right order. Use your fingers to put the wires in the correct order so
they can be properly crimped. The proper sequence is as follows from left to right:
Orange/White, Orange, Green/White, Blue, Blue/White, Green, Brown/White, Brown.

Cut the wires into an even line 1⁄2 inch (13 mm) from sheathing. Hold the wires with your
thumb and index finger to keep them in order. Then, use the cutting section of the crimping tool
to cut them into an even line.

15
Insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector. Hold the RJ-45 connector so the clip is on the
underside and the small metal pins are facing up. Insert the cable into the connector so that each
of the small wires fits into the small grooves in the connector.

Stick the connector into the crimping part of the tool and squeeze twice. Insert the connector
in the crimping section of the tool until it can’t fit any further. Squeeze the handles to crimp the
connector and secure the wires. Release the handles, then squeeze the tool again to make sure all
of the pins are pushed down.

Remove the cable from the tool and check that all of the pins are down. Take the connector
out of the tool and look at the pins to see that they’re all pushed down in an even line. Lightly tug
at the connector to make sure it’s attached to the cable.

Cable Tester
Cable tester is used to check whether the cable is working properly or not. It has light indicator if
the cable is working properly the whole numbers that are written on the tester are bright
otherwise it becomes dark

16
