Experiment: Esmaon of Metal Content in E-Waste using Opcal Sensors

Principle: The principle behind this experiment is based on the interacon of light with
metals present in electronic waste. Opcal sensors can be employed to analyze the
reflected or transmited light, providing informaon about the metal content. Metals
exhibit unique opcal properes that allow for their idenficaon and quanficaon.
Materials and Equipment:
• E-Waste samples (e.g., circuit boards, electronic components)
• Opcal sensors (spectrophotometer or colorimeter)
• Light source
• Computer with analysis soware
• Safety equipment (gloves, goggles)
Procedure:
Sample Preparaon:
• Collect various e-waste samples containing metals.
• Disassemble the e-waste components to expose the metal surfaces.
• Clean the metal surfaces to remove any contaminants.

Calibraon of Opcal Sensor:

• Calibrate the opcal sensor using standard metal soluons of known
concentraons.
• Record the sensor responses for each standard concentraon to create a
calibraon curve.
Measurement of E-Waste Samples:
• Place the prepared e-waste samples in the path of the opcal sensor.
• Illuminate the samples with the light source and record the opcal sensor
readings.
• Repeat the measurements for each e-waste sample.
Data Analysis:
• Use the calibraon curve to correlate the sensor readings with metal
concentraons.
• Calculate the metal content in each e-waste sample based on the calibraon
curve.
• Comparison and Interpretaon:
• Compare the esmated metal content with the actual composion of the e-
waste samples.
• Analyze the accuracy and precision of the opcal sensor method.

Observaons:
• Record the sensor readings for each e-waste sample.
• Note any variaons in sensor responses among different samples.
• Record the calculated metal concentraons for each e-waste sample.
Conclusion:
This experiment demonstrates the applicaon of opcal sensors in esmang
metal content in e-waste. The observaons and analysis help in understanding the
potenal of opcal sensing technology for environmental monitoring and waste
management.
