Answer all questions
1. An 8-pole, 50 Hz, 3-phase induction motor runs at a slip of 4% delivering full load torque.
The standstill rotor resistance and reactance are 0.1 Ω per phase and 0.6 Ω per phase. To
reduce the sped to 570 rpm, calculate the resistance per phase to be added to the rotor
circuit with torque remaining constant. [5M] [CO03] [3]
2. A 12 kW, 6-pole, 50 Hz, 400 V, delta-connected induction motor runs at 360 rpm on full
load with an efficiency of 90% and 0.8 power factor. If it takes 90 A on direct online
starting, calculate the ratio of starting torque to full load torque with a star-delta starter.
[5M] [CO03] [3]
3. Illustrate the load characteristics of an isolated Induction Generator operating alone.
[5M] [CO01] [2]
4. A 1.5 MVA, 11 kV, 3-phase star connected synchronous generator has armature resistance
and synchronous reactance of 1.2 Ω per phase and 25 Ω per phase. Calculate the power
factor on full load at which the regulation becomes zero. [5M] [CO03] [3]
5. Discuss the speed control of three-phase induction motor by varying line frequency.

6. A 5000 kVA, 6600 V, 3-phase, 50 Hz star connected alternator has the following test data:
If (A) 32 50 75 100 140
OCC (V) 3100 4900 6600 7500 8300
Full load ZPF (V) 0 1850 4250 5800 7000
Determine the regulation of alternator by ZPF method at full load UPF. [Use Graph Sheet]
[10M] [CO03] [4]
7. A 13.2 kV, 120 MVA, 60 Hz star connected salient-pole synchronous generator has a
direct-axis reactance of 0.62 Ω and quadrature-axis reactance of 0.40 Ω, the armature
resistance being negligible. While operating at 0.8 lagging PF at rated load with torque
angle of 10.7°,
(i) Determine the voltage regulation of the alternator and power supplied assuming that it
has a cylindrical rotor of reactance Xd.
(ii) Determine the voltage regulation of the salient-pole machine and power supplied.
[10M] [CO02] [3]
8. A 3-phase, 8-pole, 750 rpm star-connected alternator had 72 slots on the armature. Each
slot has 12 conductors and winding is short-chorded by 2 slots. The useful flux per pole is
0.06 Wb. Calculate the emf induced (line) of the machine on open circuit.
