IN - Assignment Question

This assignment requires students to design a LAN network for a company called VanTech with branches in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya. Students will work in groups of up to 4 people. Each student is responsible for designing the network topology and IP addressing scheme for a specific floor or building. They must justify their design choices. Students will use Cisco Packet Tracer to simulate their network design. The individual part involves designing the floor plan and network diagram. The group part involves collaboratively justifying the overall topology and IP addressing plan. Students must submit network diagrams, justifications, and a Packet Tracer file of their full network design.

This assignment’s aim is to allow students to design and configure a LAN topology by applying
basic principles of wired and wireless networks, together with the configuration of network devices
(including routers & switches) by using the Cisco Packet Tracer simulation tool. Students are also
expected to be able to design their IP addressing scheme with subnetting to segment their network.

1.Assessed Learning Outcomes:

CLO2: Form the local area network design and configuration using a simulation tool for the
given scenario. (A2, PLO6)
CLO3: Work in a team to justify the topology and IP addressing plan based on the network
design (A3, PLO4)

Note: PLO6 –Digital Skills. PLO4 – Interpersonal Skills.

2. Scenario:
VanTech is a premier enterprise software company offering multiple products at scale both in
the enterprise arena and in the business-to-business SaaS space. They are a technology partner
of choice for many of the world’s leading enterprises to manage and monitor their Microsoft
BizTalk and Azure Serverless environments. It is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. VanTech
emphasis more on employee values and provide an environment where the employee can learn,
think, innovate and build the project. VanTech started in 2013 as a one-man shop and has been
growing organically ever since. Most recently the CEO of Vantech planned to move only two
departments such as technical and development to Cyberjaya by mid-2023 and the remaining
departments will operate in Kuala Lumpur. Meanwhile, The CEO wants to restructure the
existing network infrastructure in the Kuala Lumpur building and wants to lay down a new
network infrastructure. The Kuala Lumpur building has got two floors and is the same as the
new building in Cyberjaya.

In the Kuala Lumpur branch, the first floor has a reception area, waiting room, cafeteria, and
Internet and CCTV monitor room. The second floor has the CEO room, KL branch manager
room, Finance department, Human resource department, and administrative office room for
business.

In the Cyber Jaya branch, the first floor has a reception area, a pantry for staff, Cyber Jaya
branch manager room, and a CTO room. The second floor has a development hub, Server
room, technical assistant to monitor the network, and a meeting/conference room.

All staff will be using laptops and PCs with a suitable office environment and apply the
printer at the necessary department that is connected to a network. Both blocks have a
necessary IoT infrastructure such as CCTV and WiFi.

Your team is appointed to assist with the proposal to plan for a suitable network design for this
new project. The main objective is to identify the requirement and conduct research to propose a
suitable topology diagram with the necessary network devices and IP addressing scheme to
make it work.

Your research should include :

 Layout of the building
 Number of hosts (per room/building)
 Justification of the Topology
 IP Addressing scheme

The findings and outcome of your research should be arranged in a proper flow to be presented to
the Technical team who are involved in the full design of the network. In addition, prepare a Cisco
Packet Tracer diagram as a proof of concept for your research work.

3. Important Instructions for online submission:

1. This assignment contains two parts. Individual and Group (Refer to the Marking Rubric)

2. The Individual assignment should be submitted individually by the students on the 9th
week of the semester.

3. The group assignment should be completed in a group of not more than 4 members. The
group assignment and packet tracer file must be submitted by the group leader.
4. Select the team leader among the group members for the group assignment.
5. All submissions should be done in Moodle
6. Double-checkeck the work before online submission (Peer Evaluation form and Self-
Reflection, etc).
