CHAPTER 7 POWERS AND ROOTS 7. EXPONENTIAL NOTATIONS (Positive powers only) |f number 3 is multiplied to itself 4 times, we get : 3 x 3x 3 x 3. The product of 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 can be written as 34. 34 is called the exponential notation for the product of 3 x 3 x 3 x 3. In the product 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 34, the repeating number 3 is called the base, whereas 4 is called the exponent (or index or power). Similarly: (i) _ in 2°, base = 2 and exponent (power) = 3 (ii) in (-3)4, base = -3 and exponent (power) = 4 2 (ii) in x3, base = x and exponent (index) = = and so on. In general, 34 is read as: 3 raised to the power 4 or the fourth power of three. 1. (8)t=-3x-3x-3x-3=81 and —(3)#=-(8x3x3x3)=-81 2. For any non-zero number a, a =1 je 2 =1, 5)? Jes and so on. 3.
