Oliver Resumen
Oliver Resumen
Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse and there he was assisted by an old nurse and
a doctor. His mother was a woman who had arrived at the workhouse the night before. She died moments after his birth and no
one knew her name or where she came from. Oliver was a weak and pale child and since there was no one in the workhouse to
take care of him he was sent to a baby farm. Around 30 other children resided there. They were in the care of old Mrs. Mann.
She did not take good care of them, she beat them, gave them little food and clothing, and kept for herself the money that was
for the children's food. Oliver lived there until he was nine years old and Mr. Mumble the beadle came to the baby farm to take
him back to the workhouse as he was old enough to come back. Oliver was glad to be away from Mrs. Mann's violence but he
was also sad because he was leaving his only friends behind. In the workhouse the children were fed a bowl of soup three times
a day and a piece of bread on Sundays. One day Oliver was chosen by the other children to ask for more food. Oliver was locked
up and the board offered a reward to anyone who wanted to take him to work. And that's how the first chapter ends.
The second chapter is about Oliver's first job. Oliver had been locked up for a week until Mr. Mumble offered him up to the
undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry. So, Oliver was sent to work for the undertaker. Already in the house of Mr. Sowerberry Oliver was
introduced to Mrs. Sowerberry and fed with the meat that was left over from the dog by Charlotte, a girl who worked there.
Oliver was sent to sleep in the shop around the coffins. The next day Oliver met Noah Claypole, a charity boy, he also worked
there and believed he was superior to Oliver because he had and knew his parents. That's why he beat him and mistreated him.
After a few weeks Mr. Sowerberry decided that he would train Oliver in the Undertaker business as his permanently sad face
was well suited to collecting bodies from homes and taking them to funerals. One day Oliver and Mr. Sowerberry had to collect
the body of a woman in the poorest part of town. The woman had starved to death and Oliver was very surprised by everything
he had seen there. However, Mr. Sowerberry told him that he would get used to it. And that’s how the second chapter ends.
In the third chapter Oliver goes to London. He became an undertaker assistant and he gained a lot of experience. However, the
people around him treated him badly. One day Noah insulted Oliver's mother. Oliver, very angry, took him by the neck, hit him
and threw him to the ground. Noah screamed for help and said that Oliver wanted to kill him. Charlotte, Mrs. Sowerberry and
Noah beat Oliver up and when they got tired, they locked him in the cellar. Mrs. Sowerberry told Noah to find Mr. Mumble. He
told the lady that Oliver's actions were due to the meat she had given him. At that moment Mr. Sowerberry arrived and he also
hit Oliver. That night Oliver unlocked the door and left the house. As he walked, he saw a sign of London. Oliver believed that
this was the best place for him since he had heard some rumors in the workhouse. After some miles Oliver realized how far it
was. He only had a piece of bread, a rough shirt, two pairs of socks and a peny. On the seventh day of his trek Oliver arrived the
town of Bannet outside London. Lacking the strength to beg for food, he sat on the side of the road. A boy approached him and
asked him what was wrong. Oliver told him that he had been walking for a week. Then the strange boy, whose name was Jack
Dawkings, bought him a meal and told him that he knew a man who could take him in for the night and Oliver agreed. And
that's how the third chapter ends.
The fourth chapter is about Oliver in London. Jack or also nicknamed "the artful dodger", took Noah to the place that he had
told him. This was the dirtiest, most miserable place Oliver had ever seen. There he met Fagin, the man who would give him
asylum, and other children. Oliver ate and slept there for several days watching and playing very strange games for him that
involved taking things out of pockets. One day Oliver was finally able to go out to work with Jack and another boy. They were
walking down the street when Jack saw a rich old man. So, he along with the other child without the old man realizing they
robbed him and went running. Oliver was totally surprised and when he realized that what the children were doing was stealing,
he went out to run. At that moment, the old man realized the robbery and saw Oliver run and shouted "Stop Thief!" and a
crowd began to chase Oliver. The crowd caught him and they asked the old man if he was the boy and he said yes but don't hurt
him. However, a policeman arrived and took Oliver away.
The fifth chapter is about Oliver's life changes. He was taken to the police station. The old man was not sure that Oliver was the
thief, but the policeman told him that he would go with the magistrate. The magistrate was a judge who dealt with juvenile
crimes. Oliver was locked up in a cell until court was ready. The magistrate was Mr. Fang. He had the old man testify and found
Oliver guilty of the robbery. Oliver fainted as he was very ill. At that moment the owner of the bookstore entered the court and
declared that he had seen everything and that Oliver was innocent. Mr. fang then pleads Oliver not guilty. The old man named,
Mr. Brownlow, picked up Oliver, who was still passed out, and brought him to his house. There Oliver received care and
kindness that he never had and was unconscious for several days. When Oliver woke up, he was scared because he didn't know
where he was and the housekeeper, Mrs. Bedwin, told him to go back to bed because he was very weak. When Oliver was able
to sit down, Mr. Brownlow went to visit him. Oliver asked him if he was mad and Mr. Brownow told him no. At which point he
tells the housekeeper to look at the painting of the woman above Oliver's head. Oliver and the woman were very similar. Oliver
scared, fainted. On the other hand, Dodger and Charly Bates, the real thieves returned with Mr. Fagin. He asked them where
Oliver was and Dodger told him that the police took him. At that moment, Mr. Bill Sikes, a big man around 35 years old, enters.
Mr. Fagin tells him about Oliver and that he fears that he will put them in danger. Then Mr. Sikes tells him that they should
catch him when he leaves the police station. Nancy, a lady who knew Oliver, was sent to the station to ask for him. The
policeman told her that she was with the old man in Pentoville. Nancy told this to Mr. Sikes and Fagin. When Mr. Sikes finds out,
he leaves the place in search of Oliver and Mr. Fagin ordered the other children to look for Oliver and not return until they hear
from him.
In the sixth chapter Oliver is found again. Oliver was starting to pull himself together at Mr. Brownlow's house and the paint on
the wall had been removed. Those were happy days for Oliver. Mr. Brownlow asked Oliver to tell him the story of his life, but
was interrupted by a visit from his old friend, Mr. Grimwig. Mr. Grimwig did not believe in Oliver's innocence so he asked him to
return some books to the bookstore and gave him money to buy more. Oliver delightedly went to do so, but on his way was
caught by Nancy who posed as her sister and Mr. Sikes. They took him back to Mr Fagin's house. There Oliver asked to be let
back or even return the books and money so they don't think he had stolen them but Mr. Fagin didn't let him. Oliver then tried
to run and call for help, but he was caught and Mr Fagin hit him with a piece of wood. He was going to do it again, but Nancy
stopped him. They locked Oliver who was feeling tired and sick in a room.
The seventh chapter is about the robbery. Mr. Mumble was in London finishing some business and reading the newspaper
found a story about Oliver, which said that he had been kidnapped from his house in Pentoville and offered a reward for some
information about him. Mr. Bumble went there at once and told all that he knew of Oliver. That he was an orphan, that he
worked at the funeral home, he beat up Noah and escaped from the store. Mumble received the reward and Mr. Brownlow was
very disappointed and did not want to hear from him again. On the other hand, Oliver was still locked up in Fagin's house.
Dodger and Charles Bites asked him why he didn't want to be a thief and Oliver replied that he didn't want to be one who
wanted to go back to Pentoville. The days passed and Oliver again spent a lot of time with Dodger and Charles bites, playing the
handkerchief game and listening to Mr Fagin's stories. One night Mr. Fagin met Mr. Sikes, Nancy was there too. There they
planned the assault on a house. Sikes had already investigated about the house and told him that he needed a boy. They both
thought of Oliver for the job. The next day Nancy took Oliver to Bill's house. There, Bill threatened Oliver with a gun and took
him to a house where there were two other men. Then went to the house. Oliver realized it was a robbery. Mr Fagin told him to
go in through the window and open the door and if he didn’t, he would kill him. Oliver decided that he would go inside and try
to alert the family, but as he entered through the window noises were heard and two men appeared from the stairs, Oliver was
beaten and shots were heard. Mr Sikes pulled Oliver out who was bleeding and an alarm began to go off along with the
gunshots.
The eighth chapter is about what happened after the robbery. In the poorhouse, the widow Corney, who was in charge of it,
was together with Mr. Mumble when someone told her that a lady named Sally, who was dying, wanted to tell her something.
Sally told Corney that she had helped a woman who gave birth to a child and that she had promised to take care of it for her,
but nevertheless she stole the gold she had. Corney asked who the boy was and he said Oliver and she died. Corney then went
back to Mr. Mumble who proposed to her and she accepted and after that she told him what Sally had told her. On the other
hand, Toby had arrived at fagin's house, the man he had gone to rob along with Sikes and Oliver. Toby told what happened in
the robbery and that in order to escape faster they left Oliver in a field. Fagin hearing this went to Sikes' house and told Nancy,
who was drunk, that if Oliver didn't show up, she would tell the police about Sikes. Fagin came back to his house and met Monk.
Fagin told him what happened and Monk told him that it was badly planned. When they were talking Monk thought he saw the
shadow of a woman, but Fagin saw nothing. Meanwhile, Oliver was still lying in the field, it started to rain, and with the little
strength he had he started walking and found a path. As he approached, he saw that it was the house of the robbery. Oliver fell
in the doorway and knocked the door. One of the servants said that he was the thief who had been shot. A young woman came
and asked the servants to call a policeman, a doctor, and take Oliver to a room and treat him well.
In chapter nine Oliver begins a new life. At the robbery house the owner of the house Mrs. Maylie and her niece Rose were
waiting for the doctor. When the doctor arrived and checked Oliver, he asked the women to go see the child. None of them
believed that Oliver was a bad boy or that he belonged to a gang of criminals. Rose asked her aunt to do something since the
police would be arriving soon. So, the doctor devised a plan. A little later Oliver woke up and although he was very weak, he told
the story of him. So, they decided that they would help Oliver. The doctor's plan consisted of making the servants doubt by
telling them that they could not see the child exactly at night. And that Oliver could be innocent. When the police arrived, the
servants and they were served with beer and gave that explanation. The cops knew all the thieves in the area and Oliver was
unknown to them so they left Oliver in the care of the women and the doctor. A week later Oliver was able to get out of bed. He
was grateful to the rescuers for him, but he wanted to find Mr. Brownlow. So, when the doctor offered Oliver a ride to London
to see Mr. Brownlow he happily agreed. But when they got to the house it was empty. Mr. Brownlow had gone abroad. Oliver
was very disappointed. But his new friends, Mrs. Mayley and Rose moved into a cottage in the country and took Oliver with
them. There Oliver began a new life away from crime and poverty.
Chapter number ten is about life in the country. Oliver was still at the cottage in the country with Rose and Mrs. Mayley. One
morning Rose was feeling ill and ill. Oliver and Mrs. Mayley thought she might die. So Mayley sent Oliver to the nearest town to
send a letter to Dr. Losberne and his son, Harry. Oliver ran to send the letters and when he returned he collided with a man
who, cursing Oliver, had a fit and fell to the ground. Oliver went on his way thinking the man was crazy. The next day, Harry and
Doctor Losberne arrived at the field and the doctor told them that Rose was sick but she would not die. Oliver cried with joy.
Two days later, Mrs. Mayey spoke privately with Harry and told him that she knew he wanted to marry Rose and to remember
her doubtful birth. Since that could harm him. However, Harry didn't care about that. Days later, Oliver was sleeping and he
believed that he was dreaming, but when he woke up he realized that it was not a dream. Fagin and the gentleman Oliver had
bumped into in the village were facing him at the window. Seeing Oliver they both ran away and Oliver yelled for help. Harry
and Doctor Losberne searched for the criminals, but found nothing. Harry said it could just be a bad dream, but Oliver was sure
of what he had seen. Harry proposed to Rose, but she refused because it would affect her plans as a politician and Harry left
promising her that in a year he would change her mind. On the other hand, Mr. Mumble was in a pub when Monk approached
him and told him that he was looking for him to receive information about Oliver's mother's nurse. Mumble told him that he
knew someone who could give him that information and Monk gave him an address where they could meet. Mumble took Mrs.
Mumble to the spot. There, she asked him how much she was going to pay him for the information and then told him that she
was present when the nurse died and that she had stolen Oliver's mom when she died. But that when the nurse died, she found
in her hand a receipt from a moneylender. When she went where the paper said she received a gold locket with a wedding ring
and the name Agnes. Monk took the reliquary and threw it into the river warning both that if they saw each other again they
would not know each other.
In chapter eleven Nancy pays a visit. Nancy was at the Sikes house. They were both very weak and Nancy fainted. At that
moment, Fagin arrived with the children who helped Nancy. Sikes told Fagin that he wanted money that he had already worked
a lot and that he did not trust him so Nancy told him to go to Fagin and take the money. When Nancy got to the house, Monk
arrived. And he wanted to speak to Fagin in private. Nancy eavesdropped on the conversation. When they finished talking
Nancy took the money and left. When she arrived at Sikes' house, he fell asleep from the drugs she had given him. Nancy went
to the hotel where Miss Mayley was staying. She there she told him what she had heard. She told him that Monk offered Fagin
money to find Oliver and turn him into a thief and that they knew where they were. She also told him that Monk said that Oliver
was her brother and that he had all the money from her father's will safe. Nancy told her that they would meet on Sundays
between 11 and 12 for more information if she was still alive. The next day Oliver tells Rose that he saw Mr. Brownlow so she
tells him that they would go see him. When they got to the place, Rose talked to Brownlow and told him everything about Oliver
and that he wasn't a thief. Oliver was reunited with him and with Mrs. Bedwin, the housekeeper. Oliver cried with happiness.
While they were talking, Rose and Mr. Brownow talked privately, and Rose told him what Nancy told her. They both decided
that they should tell Dr. Losberne and Mrs. Mayley and that they would meet at the hotel that evening. There they decided that
to find out the truth they would have to find out who Oliver's parents were and make Monk talk. And for that they had to wait
until Sunday and talk to Nancy.
In chapter 12 Nancy has a date. Noah and Charlotte, tired of working at the undertaker, stole Mr. Sowerberry's money and
traveled to London. Noah wanted to be the leader of some gang. They were in a pub when they were approached by Fagin who
had heard about the robbery. He told them that he belonged to the business and could introduce them to people. Noah asked
what he would have to do and Fagin told him to watch children or steal from them and in exchange he would let them live in his
house for free. Noah agreed. It was 11 o'clock and Nancy had to meet Rose but Sikes didn't let her out of it. Fagin who was in
the house began to suspect Nancy. He thought she had another man. Also, Fagin wanted to get rid of Sikes because he knew too
much and put him in danger. He then he planned that he would persuade Nancy to poison sikes. But first Fagin had to find out
who her new man was so he threatened to tell Sikes and he would have Nancy in her hands. So fagin asked Noah to keep an eye
on Nancy. On Sunday Nancy went to the bridge where she met Rose and Mr. Brownlow. Noah watched them in the shadows.
Nancy told them that she was scared and that she didn't want anyone from the gang or Fagin to be hanged, that she couldn't
betray them. She told them what Monk was like and where she used to go. Noah told Fagin everything. Fagin did not believe in
Nancy and was afraid of being hanged and when he saw Sikes he asked noah to tell everything he had heard from Nancy. An
enraged Sikes went looking for Nancy. Nancy was at her house. When he arrived, she closed the door and was going to shoot
him but she preferred to hit him twice in the head with the gun and then knock her down with a stick.
Chapter 13 is about the end of the gang. After killing Nancy, Sikes left the house and went from one town to another. He wanted
to drown his dog but it escaped. Sikes felt that Nancy's ghost was haunting him and he thought that he could take some of
Fagin's money and escape to France. On the other hand, Monk was kidnapped by Mr. Brownlow, who asked him to confess
everything or he would have him arrested. Brownlow knew everything about him. Browlow knew that his father had been
forced to marry a woman and that he was the fruit of that marriage. Then one of his relatives died and his father would receive
the inheritance in France but he fell ill there and died. When Mok's mother found out, she traveled to France and the money
from the inheritance went to them. But before receiving the money, monk's father went to see mr. browlow and gave him a
painting of the woman he wanted to marry and then gave some of the inheritance to monk and his mother. flee to France.
Monk told him that he had no proof that this is true. But Mr. Brownlow told him that he knew that he had destroyed the
evidence and that they had even murdered Nancy and that he was also an accomplice. Giving up, Monk said he would testify
with witnesses. Browlow told him that he was to sign a paper where he was to give Oliver the money that belongs to him and
everything would remain a secret. Dr. Loberne told Mr. Brownlow that they had found Sikes's dog and perhaps they had already
found him too. Fagin was arrested and the rest of the gang were hiding in another house. The gang members were discussing
fagin's arrest when the dog walked in and then Sikes. Moments later, a crowd of people arrived looking for the murderer and
the gang. Sikes, followed by his dog, was about to escape with a rope tied to the chimney, but staggered back and fell, hanged.
His dog fell and died too.
