Function Week5 PC

A function is a rule that assigns each element of one set to a unique element of another set. It can be represented as f: X → Y, where f(x) = y for all x in set X. Functions can be represented through tables, graphs, formulas, or words. An example is the concentration of carbon dioxide C in the atmosphere over time t since 1960, written as C = f(t). Interpreting f(40) = 370 means the carbon dioxide concentration was 370 parts per million in the year 2000. Practice problems involve evaluating functions for given values of x.

 Definition: A function from a set X to a set Y is a rule f which assigns
to every element x of X a unique element y of Y .
Mathematically it can be written as
f: X → Y
f(x)=y for all x belong to X
