MICROSCOPIC ACTIVITY (Protozoans)

Z00106 W89S34 Laboratory

Group 1 members (Family names) : Chua, Malna, Taoc, Yusoph Date: 5/26/2023
Objective:
- To determine the distinguishable feature of the cyst and the trophozoite stage of the Protozoan
parasites including:
o Entamoeba histolytica
o Balantidium coli
o Iodamoeba butschlii
o Giardia lamblia
o Endolimax nana
o Entamoeba coli
Materials:
- The materials for the activity includes the following:
o Prepared slides for the protozoan parasites (Cyst and trophozoite stage)
o Microscope
o Oil Immersion objective
o Laboratory notebook
Results and Discussion:
- After conducting the microscopy activity, we were able to get the following image results for each
of the protozoan parasites:

A. Entamoeba histolytica

- HPO objective - Image source: Bench aids for the diagnosis

- Found in the microscopy of the intestinal parasites (1994, WHO)
Scientific name: Entamoeba histolytica Scientific name: Entamoeba histolytica
Stage (Cyst or Trophozoite): Cyst stage Stage (Cyst or Trophozoite): Trophozoite stage
Mode of transmission: Ingestion of fecally contaminated food or water containing amoebic cysts.
Body habitat: Mucosa and sub-mucosa of the large intestine (caecum and sigmoidorectal region of man)
B. Balantidium coli
- Oil Immersion Objective - Oil Immersion Objective
- Found in the microscope - Found in the microscope
Scientific name: Balantidium coli Scientific name: Balantidium coli
Stage (Cyst or Trophozoite): Cyst stage Stage (Cyst or Trophozoite): Trophozoite stage
Mode of transmission: Transmission occurs most commonly through the fecal-oral route by the oral
ingestion of protozoan cysts from contaminated food or direct contact with animals
Body habitat: The habitat of Balantidium coli in humans is the cecum and colon.
