1. An AM signal has the form

u(t) = [20 + 2 cos 3000πt + 10 cos 6000πt] cos 2πfct
where fc = 105 Hz.
(a) Sketch the (voltage) spectrum of u(t)
(b) Determine the power in each of the frequency components
(c) Determine the modulation index
(d) Determine the power in the sidebands, the total power, and the ratio of the sidebands power to the
total power
2. The output signal from an AM modulator is: u(t) = 5cos(1800πt) + 20cos(2000πt) + 5cos(2200πt) a)
Determine the modulating signal m(t) and the carrier c(t). b) Determine the modulation index. c)
Determine the ratio of the power in the sidebands to the power in the carrier.
3. A 180 kHz carrier having an amplitude of 50V is modulated by a 3 kHz audio signal having an
amplitude of 20V.

(i)Determine the maximum and minimum amplitude of the modulated wave (AM envelope) and sketch
the envelope produced.

(ii)Calculate the modulation factor and percent of modulation.

(iii)Distinguish the frequencies that would show up in the spectrum analysis of the modulated wave.

(iv)Construct the mathematical expression of the modulated wave

(v)Draw the voltage and frequency spectrum of the modulated wave.

(vi)Discuss what will happen to the modulated wave if the amplitude of the audio signal is increased
higher than the amplitude of the carrier signal.
4. A bandwidth of 100 kHz is to be considered for the transmission of AM signals. If the highest audio
frequency that is used to modulate the carriers is 5 kHz, determine how many stations could broadcast
within this band simultaneously without interfering with one another
5. Two inputs to an amplitude modulator is given as and. V1=10sin2π200x103t and V2=2sin2π20x103t

Construct the mathematical expression for the amplitude modulated signal, Vam(t).

6. Given the output of an AM, the modulator is a modulated wave with maximum and minimum
positive envelope of 30V and 20V, respectively. The carrier frequency is 500 kHz, while the audio
signal is a 5 kHz single tone. The equivalent resistance of the transmitting antenna is 50Ω. Evaluate

(i) the peak amplitudes of the carrier, audio, and the sideband voltages.
(ii) The modulation index, m.

(iii) Power of the carrier signal, total sideband powers, and the total power.
