Example-3 & Assign-3

The document provides the design of an overflow section for a concrete gravity dam. It is given that the downstream face slopes at 0.7H:1V, the design discharge is 8000m3/s, the spillway crest height is 204m, and the river bed level is 100m. The spillway consists of 6 spans of 10m each with pier thickness of 2.5m. Calculations are shown to determine the effective spillway length as 55.1m and overflow height as 16.4m. Equations are provided to calculate the downstream and upstream profile coordinates. The coordinates are listed and a scale map can be used to plot the dam profile.

Example:

Design a suitable section for the overflow portion of a concrete gravity dam having the
downstream face sloping at a slope of 0.7H:1V. The design discharge for the spillway is
8000m3/s. The height of the spillway crest is kept at RL 204.0m. The avg. river bed level at the
site is 100.0m. The spillway length consists of 6 spans having a clear width of 10m each.
Thickness of each pier may be taken to be 2.5m and take Cd=2.2.

Given; D/s slope 0.7H:1V

Crest level =204m
Bed level=100m
Crest length = 6spans*10m=60m
No. of piers = n-1= 6-1= 5
pier thickness= 2.5m
Solution.
𝑄=𝐶 𝐿 𝐻
𝐿 = 𝐿 − 2(𝑁𝐾 + 𝐾 )𝐻 Now , 𝑖𝑠 𝐻 > 1.33𝐻 ?
So let us assume; Le = L (only for approximation of He)
Le = L = 6 x 10=60m 𝑄=𝐶 𝐿 𝐻

8000 = 2.2(60) 𝐻
𝐻 = 15.4𝑚

And the height of spillway, H = 204 – 100 = 104m

⸫ = = 6.7 > 1.33 𝐻 𝐻 = 15.4𝑚

.

Now, determine the effective length Le

Assuming, Round-nosed piers Kp = 0.01
Rounded abutment Ka = 0.1
The number of piers N = 5
Here, the actual value of He is slightly more than 15.4m. So let’s try 16.4m
𝐿 = 𝐿 − 2(𝑁𝐾 + 𝐾 )𝐻
= 60 − 2(5 0.01 + 0.1) 16.4
= 55.1𝑚
Now, 𝑄 = 𝐶 𝐿 𝐻
8000 = 2.2(55.1) 𝐻 𝐻 = 16.4𝑚

X 27.4 37.4 47.4 57.4 …. 85.37

Using Hd =16.4m,

This curve should go up to = −0.27𝐻 = −0.27 16.4 = −4.428𝑚

Now the co-ordinates will be

X -0.5 -1 -2 -3 -4 -4.428

Y 0.05 0.093 0.28 0.67 1.36 2.07

Therefore, using a scale map we can plot the profile of the dam using these values of
coordinates.
