Selection Committee,

Plant Hormone Biology Group,

Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences,

University of Amsterdam,

Subject: Letter of Motivation for PhD Candidate Position in MicroHealth Project

Dear Selection Committee,

I am writing to express my enthusiasm for the PhD candidate position in the MicroHealth project,
focusing on the effect of agriculture on the plant microbiome at the University of Amsterdam. My
academic journey and research experiences have instilled in me a profound passion for
understanding the intricate interactions between plants and their microbiome.

Throughout my academic pursuit, I earned an M.Sc. (Hons.) in Agriculture with a

specialization in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. My
research centered on combining ability studies for yield traits in Upland cotton, enhancing my
proficiency in statistical analysis and experimental design, skills that are pivotal for investigating
complex ecological systems.

Furthermore, my undergraduate degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics, where I conducted

experiments under both greenhouse and field conditions, honed my practical skills and allowed
me to gain expertise in emasculation and pollination across various crops. Moreover, my internship
at the Oilseeds Research Institute, Faisalabad, exposed me to PCR, tissue culture, PAGE, genetic
transformation, and DNA extraction techniques, providing me with a robust foundation in
experimental plant biology.

My academic experiences, coupled with my keen interest in experimental plant biology

and the plant microbiome, align closely with the objectives outlined in the MicroHealth project. I
am excited about the opportunity to contribute my skills to the interdisciplinary team at the
Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences.

Having delved into combining ability studies for crop improvement during my M.Sc. and
gained hands-on experience in diverse experimental techniques, I am prepared to plan, execute,
and analyze experiments under field and greenhouse conditions to explore the impact of fertilizers
on the plant microbiome and nutritional composition. Moreover, my familiarity with omics
analysis and programming in R aligns with the requirements for investigating complex ecological
interactions.

The opportunity to be part of a team that delves into the chemical communication of plants
with their environment, aiming to improve stress resilience in crops for sustainable food
production, perfectly aligns with my research interests and career aspirations. I am committed to
contributing meaningfully to this research endeavor and leveraging this experience to pursue a
career dedicated to sustainable agriculture and ecological conservation.

I am eager to immerse myself in the diverse academic environment offered by the

University of Amsterdam and the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences. The prospect of
collaborating with renowned researchers and utilizing cutting-edge resources deeply resonates
with my ambitions.

I am enthusiastic about the chance to contribute my skills and passion to the MicroHealth
project and am excited by the prospect of conducting innovative research. I am looking forward to
the opportunity to discuss my application further.

Thank you for considering my candidacy.

Kind Regards,

Sadia Farooq
