Metorology Lab 1 Experiment 2

The document discusses micrometers and their use in measuring depth and diameter. Micrometers work by using a calibrated screw thread and circular scale to make measurements. Different types are described, including outside and depth micrometers. Procedures explain using a ratchet to prevent undue pressure and calculating least count based on screw pitch and scale divisions. Measurement results are shown for three diameters. Key points like types of micrometers, backlash error, and uses of the ratchet stop are discussed. The conclusion states that micrometers provide more precise measurements than calipers due to their more sensitive scale.

INTRODUCTION

Micrometers are designated according to screw and nut principle where a calibrated screw
thread and a circular scale divisions are used to indicate the principle practical part of main
scale divisions.

Outside Micrometer

The semicircular frame carries a fixed anvil at one extremely and cylindrical barrel at the
other end. A fine accurately cut screw of uniform pitch is machined on a spindle. The spindle
passes through the barrel and its left hand side constitutes the movable anvil. A sleeve fits on
the screw and caries on its inner edge a circular scale divided – into desired no.of divisions.
The spindle with its screw and thimnle are in one piece and sleeve forms the nut.The thimble
scale serves to measure the friction of its circular rotations. The number of complete rotations
is read from main scale, which is graduated in “mm” on nut parallel to axis to screw.
Depth Micrometer

OBJECTIVE

To measure depth and diameter of given objects by using Micrometer.

APPARATUS

Micrometer and objects

PROCEDURE

The work piece is held between the anvils without undue pressure. This is accomplished by
having a retched drive to turn the thimble when the anvils contact each other directly or
indirectly through work piece placed in between the ratchet tips over the screw cap without
moving the screw forwards and thus avoids undue pressure.

Least Count = Pitch of the screw/ No. of Divisions on Circular Scale. If Pitch of screw is
0.5mm and Circular Scale has 50 divisions on it, then

Least Count = 0.5 / 50 – 0.01mm

In measuring, the dimension of work piece the main scale up to the leveled edge of thimble
and no. of divisions of thimble scale to axial line on barrel are observed addition of two given
result.

DISCUSSIONS

1. What are the different types of micrometer?

 Outside Micrometer.
 Inside Micrometer.
 Micrometer Depth Gauge.
 Bench Micrometer.
 Special Purpose Micrometer. Screw Thread Micrometer. Vee-Anvil Micrometer.
Thickness Micrometer.

2. What is back lash error?

Backlash error is the error in the motion which occurs while changing the direction of
gears. If by reversing the direction of rotation of the thimble, the tip of the screw does
not start moving in the opposite direction immediately but remains stationary for a
part of rotation; it is called backlash error.

3. How back lash error is avoided?

To avoid the backlash error, while taking the measurements the screw should be
rotated in one direction only. If the direction of rotation of the screw needs to be
changed, then it should be stopped for a while and then rotated in the reverse
direction.

4. What is the use of ratchet stop in micrometer?

Micrometres used to take the outside measurements are known as outside

micrometres. The ratchet-stop or simply ratchet ensures uniform pressure between the
measuring surfaces.

5. What is the total error in micrometer?

Cumulative error is the deviation of measurement from a nominal dimension. It

includes errors like thread errors, errors of measuring faces. Maximum difference
between ordinates of cumulative error is the total error.
6. Give examples (at least5) of special-purpose micrometers.

 Moore and Wright 25-50mm Caliper Type Inside Micrometer 280 Series MW280-02.
 Moore and Wright MEB-MW280-01DDL Digital Internal Micrometer 5-30mm (1.2-
0.2 inch) 280-DDL Series. ...
 Moore and Wright 50-210mm Bore Internal Micrometer 900 Series MW902M. ...
 Moore and Wright 50-75mm Caliper Type Inside Micrometer 280 Series MW280-03.
CONCLUSION
As per the exactness of device we can infer that the micrometer screw guage has the higher
pace of precision contrasted with the vernier caliper as it has more sensitive scale that
empower the estimation taken were essentially as exact as could be expected. In this trial, the
micrometer screw measure and the vernier caliper were utilized to decided the thickness of
iron and the thickness of glass which are and around. The target of the analysis is
accomplished.
