II. Prepositions of place


A preposition of place describes the position of a person or thing in relation to another person
or thing. It answers the question “where?” It usually comes before a noun, not a verb.

 at, on, in:


 ‘at’ is used for a specific point: Ex: at the bus stop, at the top of the page, at the end
of the road (or street), at ‘a specific address’, at the entrance, at the crossroads, at the
bottom.
o Ali is waiting for you at the bus stop
o The shop is at the end of the street.

 Common expressions with ‘at’:
 at home, at work, at the office, at school, at university, at the bridge, at
reception.
Ex : o I will see you at home.
o When will you arrive at the office?

 ‘on’ is used for a surface. Ex: on the wall, on the ceiling, on the shelf, on the door, on
the cover, on the floor, on the carpet, on the menu, on a page, on a street (or road).
Ex : o There are no prices on the menu.
o There was a “no smoking” sign on the wall.

 Common expression with on’:


 On a bus, on a train, on a plane, on a ship, on a bicycle, on a motorbike, on a
horse, on the radio, on the television, on the left, on the right, on the way, on a
farm, on Fiji (island).
Ex : o Quick, come and see, my father is on TV!
o I heard the news on the radio.

 ‘in’ is used for enclosed space. Ex: in the garden, in ‘country’, in ‘city’, in a box, in
my pocket, in my wallet, in a building, in a car, in a taxi, in a lift (elevator), in a
helicopter, in a room, in water (lake, river, sea, pool) …
Ex : o The keys are in my bag.
o We are going swimming in the pool.

 Common expression with ‘in’:


 in a boat, in the newspaper, in the sky, in ‘a country’, in ‘a neighborhood’, in a
town, in a village, in a square, in a forest, in a wood, in a field, in a desert, in
bed.
Ex : o We live in Morocco.
o Let’s go for a walk in the forest.

 Other important prepositions include (see the picture below):

Ex : o The teacher stands in front of the students.


o I slowed down because there was a police car behind me.
o Number 5 is between number 4 and 6.
o I live across from/ opposite a supermarket. (= It is on the other side of the road)
o The ball is next to / beside the box.
o Our house is close to / near a supermarket.
→ For next to and beside, there is usually no space between the two objects or
nothing between them.
→ For close to and near, there is usually a little space between the two objects.
o Planes normally fly above the clouds. / I accidently spilled juice all over the carpet.
→ ‘above’ normally refers to being directly (vertically) above you.
→ ‘over’ means: physically covering the surface of something and is often used
with ‘all’.

o Your bag is under / below your bed.
