Raft foundation is a thick concrete slab reinforced with steel which covers the entire contact area of the
structure like a thick floor. Sometimes area covered by raft may be greater than the contact area depending on
the bearing capacity of the soil underneath. The reinforcing bars runs normal to each other in both top and
bottom layers of steel reinforcement.
The design of raft foundation can be carried out by the following methods
(i)conventional rigid method
(ii)Finite element method
Using conventional rigid method the following are the procedures for designing raft foundation.
(i)Check soil pressure
(ii)Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams.
(iii)Design for flexure
(iv)Design for punching shear
(v)Arrangement of reinforcement
