COMSATS University Islamabad Sahiwal Campus Discuss the history and evolution of Internet. The Internet has a rich history and has evolved significantly since its inception. Here's a brief overview: 1. ARPANET and Early Development: The Internet's origins can be traced back to ARPANET, a project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense in the late 1960s . ARPANET aimed to create a decentralized network of computers for military research and communication. 2. Birth of the Internet: The Internet as we know it today began to take shape in the 1970s when TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) was developed, providing a common language for computers to communicate. Email became one of the earliest applications of this network. 3. Expansion and Commercialization: The 1980s saw the Internet expand beyond academia and government to commercial entities. The World Wide Web (WWW) was introduced in the late 1980s by Tim Berners- Lee, revolutionizing how information was accessed and shared . 4. 1990s Internet Boom: The 1990s witnessed explosive growth in the Internet, with the development of web browsers like Netscape Navigator. E-commerce, search engines, and online services started to emerge. 5. Modern Internet: The Internet has continued to evolve with the proliferation of high-speed broadband and mobile connectivity. Social media, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) have become integral parts of the online experience. 6. Global Connectivity: The Internet has achieved worldwide reach, connecting billions of people and devices. It plays a vital role in communication, business, education, and entertainment. 7. Challenges and Future: The Internet faces challenges such as cybersecurity threats, privacy concerns, and digital divide issues. Future developments may include faster connectivity through 5G and 6G technologies, increased use of artificial intelligence, and continued growth in the IoT. The Internet's history and evolution have been marked by innovation, collaboration, and the constant quest to improve connectivity and services, making it an integral part of modern society.
