PREPARATION FOR PROCLAMATION

As lectors we are not just readers saying the words of scripture aloud. Our role is to proclaim
the sacred Word of God, the Good News that leads to our salvation. Proclaiming means to help
listeners to understand and be inspired by the Word of God. This means our role is to make
sure we can transmit an understanding of the words of scripture through careful discernment
and practice of our delivery.

LECTIO DIVINA

The practice of Lectio Divina or “Divine Reading” helps to prepare our hearts and minds for
proclamation.
Begin your preparation by praying to the Holy Spirit to open your heart and mind to truly listen
to what God is asking you to understand in the passage of scripture you are preparing to
proclaim.
Read the passage of scripture and become familiar with the text. Slowly read the passage a
second time concentrating on each sentence or phrase separately. Very slowly read the passage
a third time. Pay attention to the following.

1. Notice the “strongest” thought or feeling you have when reading the passage.
2. What words or phrases moved your heart or caused your heart to “rest”?
3. What did you sense the Lord was telling you in this reading?
4. How does this reading lead you into a deeper understanding of your faith and
relationship with God ?

DELIVERY PREPARATION

To help listeners hear the Word of God it must be enunciated clearly, pronounced accurately,
well- paced, and be audible throughout the Church.

Begin by saying the passage aloud paying attention to sentences and phrases. Knowing when to
pause is an important. Check to see that you can pronounce all the words correctly. The lector’s
work book will help with this. Make sure each word is enunciated carefully. Be mindful not to
drop your voice at the end of sentences and phrases. Be aware of words and phrases that
require more emphasis in order to move the hearts and minds of those listening.
Practice your delivery aloud keeping in mind this important message you are delivering to the
listeners.

When you have completed your preparation offer a prayer of thanksgiving for having the
opportunity to proclaim and share the Good News of the Lord with others.
