Topic: Three Phase AC System

C1. A balanced star connected of (8+j6) ohm per phase is connected to a 3 phase, 230 V, 50 Hz
AC supply. Calculate i) phase current ii) line current iii) power factor iv) power v) reactive power
vi) apparent power.

Ans: IL = IPh = 13.3A, p.f = 0.8, P = 4239 W, Q = 3179VAR, S = 5298VA

C2. A balanced delta connected of (8+j6) ohm per phase is connected to a 3 phase, 230 V, 50 Hz
AC supply. Calculate i) phase current ii) line current iii) power factor iv) power v) reactive power
vi) apparent power.

Ans: IL = 39.84A, IPh = 23A, p.f = 0.8, P = 12696.8 W, Q = 9522.7VAR, S = 15871VA

C3. Two wattmeter are used to measure the power in a 3-phase balanced load. Determine the total
power and power factor if the 2-wattmeter reads i) 1000W each both positive ii) 1000W each of
opposite sign.

Ans: P = 2000W, p.f = 1, P = 0W, p.f = 0

C4. 3 similar coils having resistance of 10 ohm and reactance of 8 ohm are connected in star across
400 V, 3 phase supply. Determine i) line current ii) total power iii) reading of each of the 2-
wattmeter connected to measure power.

Ans: IL = IPh = 18.03A, P = 9756.2W, W1 = 7131.14W, W2 = 2625W

C5. 2 - wattmeter are used to measure power in a 3- phase balanced load. The wattmeter reading
is 3400W and -1200W. Calculate i) total power ii) power factor

Ans: P = 2200W, p.f = 0.266

T1. Three similar coils each having a resistance of 10Ω and inductance of 0.04H are connected
in star across a 3 phase, 50Hz, 200V supply. Calculate the line current, total power absorbed,
reactive volt amperes and total volt amperes.

Ans. IL = 7.19A, P = 1.5505kW, Q = 1.949kVAR, S = 2.406kVA

T2. Derive relation between line current and phase current, line voltage and phase voltage in
balanced star connected load.

T3. Find the values of circuit elements for a balanced three phase load connected in delta and
draws a power of 10kW at 440V, 50Hz, the power factor is 0.6 leading.

Ans: R = 20.9Ω, C = 114.2µF


T4. In a balanced 3 phase star connected system a wattmeter is connected with its current coil in
series with Y line and pressure coil between Y and R lines. Draw a neat circuit diagram showing
the above wattmeter connection. Assuming a lagging power factor, draw the corresponding phasor
diagram and derive the wattmeter reading in terms of line voltage, line current and phase angle.

T5. Two wattmeter are used to measure power in a three phase balanced delta connected load
using two wattmeter method. The reading of two wattmeter are 500W and 2500W. Calculate total
power consumed by the three phase load and power factor.

Ans: P = 3kW, pf = 0.654

T6. Two wattmeter are connected to measure in a three phase circuit. The reading of one of the
wattmeter is 7kW when load power factor is unity. If the power factor of the load is changed to
0.707 lagging without changing the total input power. Calculate the reading of the two wattmeter.

Ans: W1 = 11.041kW, W2 = 2.959kW

T7. A balanced three phase load consists of three coils, each of resistance 4Ω and inductance
0.02H. Determine the total power when the coils are star-connected and delta-connected to a 400V,
three phase, 50Hz supply.

Ans: PY = 11.534kW, P∆ = 34.610kW

H1. Three identical impedances are connected in delta and supplied from a 400 V, 3- phase line.
Calculate the phase and line currents and the power consumed. Each impedance is (20 - j15) ohm.

Ans: IL = 27.71A, IPh = 16A, p.f = 0.8, P = 15360W

H2. Three impedances each consisting of 20 & 15-ohm inductive reactance in series are connected
in star across 400 V 3 - supply. Calculate the i) line current ii) phase current iii) total power
consumed and iv) p.f of the load.

Ans: IL = IPh = 9.23A, p.f = 0.8, P = 5116 W

H3. 2- wattmeter connected to measure the power in a three-phase balanced load read W1 = 2000W
W2 = 1000 W Calculate i) total power and ii) power factor. When does one of the 2- wattmeter
read the power negative?

Ans: P = 3000W, p.f = 0.866

H4. The power input to a 3-phase load connected to a three phase, 440 V, 50 Hz supply is measured
by two wattmeter method. The readings are 40 kW and 10kW. Calculate the power input, the p.f.
and line current.

Ans: P = 50kW, p.f = 0.693, IL =94.672A

H5. Three coils each of impedance 20 at an angle 60 are connected in star to 3-phase, 400 V, 50
Hz supply. Find the reading on each of the 2- wattmeter connected to measure power input.
Ans: IL = IPh = 11.547A, W1 = 4000 W, W2 = 0W
