First Project
First Project
Design differs form art in that it must have a purpose. Visually this
functionality is interpreted by making sure an image has a center of
attention, a point of focus. The principles & elements of design are the rules
a designer must follow to create an effective composition that cleanly
delivers a message to the audience. There are many basic principles of
design that beginners and expert designers alike should keep in mind when
working on their projects.
THE GOAL of this project is to understand the principles & elements of
design and to employ them in compositions that express an idea or meaning.
THIS PROJECT will be divided into three phases:
Phase one: Research
In this phase students will be divided into
groups of two, each group must do
research about the elements and
principles of design then presenting it on
a manual poster size A2(50*70cm). The
poster should include meaning and
images representing each point.
Phase two: 9 Compositions
Students are asked to design compositions
using Points, Lines, and Planes as the
basic elements in visual expression,
within squares of (15*15 cm + 2cm foam
frame), (3 compositions for each Point,
Line, and Plane), a total of 9
compositions. This phase will be
Phase 2 examples
presented on white cardboard with black ink pens.
Fall 2023-2024
Phase three: Relief Composition
In this phase, students are asked to choose from the 9 compositions and
combine them by exploring and producing a meaningful composition based
on design principles and elements within two frameless rectangles size
(15*20cm), (15*30cm).
Once done with the two compositions start using materials that has thickness
such as (cardboard, foam, balsa wood …etc.) to add some height to your
designs (relief) the maximum height should be 3cm. The colors that are
allowed to use is black, white and one color of your choice.
