Practice Problem Set#3

This document contains 6 practice problems related to AC-DC power conversion circuits: 1. It asks the reader to calculate transformer turns ratio, diode voltage stress, and waveform characteristics for an uncontrolled full-wave rectifier circuit. 2. It asks similar calculation questions for another uncontrolled full-wave rectifier, and adds questions about real and apparent power with both resistive and RL loads. 3. It provides questions about load voltage and supply current waveforms, harmonic analysis, and power calculations for a thyristor-controlled rectifier. 4. Another problem asks the reader to analyze waveforms, voltages, currents and power for a thyristor-controlled rectifier with a different firing angle.

ce Problem Set #3
(1) For ac to dc uncontrolled converter of Fig.5, the load current is nearly constant = 3 A. Load
resistance (RL) = 20 Ω. Input (VS) is 180 volts (rms). Find the turns-ratio of primary & secondary
of center-tapped transformer? Draw IS1 and IS2 waveforms (mark axes) and find their rms
magnitudes, Find voltage stress across diodes. Assume ideal situation.
(2)(a) For ac to dc uncontrolled converter of Fig.6, the load current is nearly constant = 1 A. Load
resistance (RL) = 35 Ω. Input (VS) is 210 volts (rms). Find the turns-ratio of primary & secondary of
transformer? Draw IS1 and IS2 waveforms (mark axes) and find their rms values. Find voltage stress
on diodes. Assume ideal situation. Find real and apparent power supplied from ac source.
Calculate input power factor.

(b) Now, for circuit of 2(a), consider the load to be only resistor of 35Ω (no inductor in series).
Considering same supply voltage, solve the problem again.

(3) For the fully controlled converter shown in Fig.4, assume VS = 200 volts (rms), 50Hz &
constant load current = 15 A. Show load voltage and supply current waveforms on same
time axis for thyristor firing angle = 600. Calculate average magnitude of load voltage and
rms line current. Estimate the magnitude of RL. Calculate real and apparent power supplied
from ac source. What will be the rms magnitudes of 3rd and 5th harmonic currents drawn
from the supply.
(4) For the fully controlled converter shown in Fig.4, assume VS = 220 volts (rms), 50Hz &
constant load current = 5 A. Show load voltage and supply current waveforms on same time
axis for thyristor firing angle = 300. Calculate average magnitude of load voltage and rms
current through supply line. Estimate the magnitude of RL. Calculate the rms current flowing
through each thyristor. Also calculate the maximum forward and reverse voltage appearing
across thyristors.
(5) Draw a 3-phase uncontrolled ac to dc bridge rectifier circuit. Assume some supply phase
sequence and accordingly number the diodes in the order they will be conducting. Consider
the rectifier circuit’s output current to be constant at 10 amperes. Assuming balanced 3-
phase ac supply of 240 volts (rms) phase voltage, calculate the real and reactive power
supplied from each phase. How much is supply side’s displacement, distortion and total
power factors? What will be the peak voltage stress across diodes?
(6) For uncontrolled rectifier of Q(5) draw the load voltage waveform and calculate the mean
value of load voltage, rms magnitude of current through each diode and rms magnitude of
5th harmonic current through each phase line.
