Activity Capacitors in Circuits

1) The document provides instructions to analyze a circuit containing multiple capacitors by identifying series and parallel combinations and calculating their equivalent capacitances. 2) The student is asked to mark series and parallel combinations on a circuit diagram, simplify the circuit by replacing combinations with their equivalents, and repeat until a single equivalent capacitance remains. 3) The final equivalent capacitance value, Ceq, summarizes the capacitance of the original complex circuit.

Step One: On the following diagram, mark all combinations of capacitors. Put a CIRCLE around the series
combinations and a BOX around all parallel combinations. Here is a start: C3 and C5 are in series, so circle them
and calculate the equivalent capacitance. Take 𝐶 = 4 𝜇𝐹 for each capacitor.

Series combinations; show work.

C35 = ____2.00 𝜇𝐹 −1 ________

1 1 1 1 1
= + = + = 0.500 𝜇𝐹 −1
𝐶35 𝐶3 𝐶5 4 𝜇𝐹 4 𝜇𝐹

𝑠𝑜 𝐶35 = 2.00 𝜇𝐹

Step two: Redraw the circuit replacing each combination from above with its single equivalent capacitance, e.g.,
C35 replaces the individual capacitors C3 and C5. Again mark as above any series or parallel combinations or two
or more capacitors in this simplified circuit and calculate their value(s).

Step Three & Four: Do this twice more and you should be down to a single “equivalent capacitance” Ceq.
Calculate its value. This is how to analyze simple circuits.
