SECTION – D
The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an internal
choice and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each. Read the passage carefully and answer
the questions that follow.

31. Werner’s theory was the first successful attempt to account for the nature of bonding in case of
coordination compounds. But this theory could not answer, why coordination compounds have
characteristic magnetic and optical properties? However, with the development of modern theories
like, valence bond theory, ligand field theory, crystal field theory and molecular orbital theory it has
been possible to explain some properties of these compounds such as colour, geometry and
magnetic properties. Magnetic nature of coordination complexes is due to the presence of unpaired
electron the central metal atom/ion. The magnetic moment of complexes can be measured by
magnetic susceptibility experiments. The results can be used to obtain information about the
structures adopted by metal complexes.

Answer the following questions:

a) Mention one limitation of Werner’s theory, which was rectified by Crystal field theory.
b) Magnetic moment of [MnBr4]2- is 5.92 BM. Predict the hybridization and geometry of the
compound.
c) Write two points of difference between primary and secondary valences, based on Werner’s
theory.
(or)
Draw all possible stereoisomers for the complex [CoCl2(en)2]+

32. A chemical reaction is the result of competition; it is a race that is won by the fastest runner. A
collection of molecules tends to do, by and large, what is easiest for them. An alkyl halide with β-
hydrogen atoms when reacted with a base or a nucleophile has two competing routes: substitution
(SN1 and SN2) and elimination. Which route will be taken up depends upon the nature of alkyl
halide, strength and size of base/nucleophile and reaction conditions. Thus, a bulkier nucleophile
will prefer to act as a base and abstracts a proton rather than approach a tetravalent carbon atom
(steric reasons) and vice versa. Similarly, a primary alkyl halide will prefer a SN2 reaction, a
secondary halide- SN2 or elimination depending upon the strength of base/nucleophile and a tertiary
halide- SN1 or elimination depending upon the stability of carbocation or the more substituted
alkene.

Answer the following questions:

a) What is the major product of formed when 2-bromobutane is treated with alcoholic KOH?
b) What will a secondary halide prefer, elimination or substitution, in the presence of a bulkier
base?
c) Predict the major product formed when 2-chloro-2-methylbutane treated with sodium ethoxide in
ethanol and write the IUPAC name of both less stable and more stable products.
