Whole Steps and Half Steps: E DB/C#

This document provides instructions for identifying whole and half steps on a musical keyboard. It asks the student to name the note that is a whole step or half step above a given starting note. Examples are provided to demonstrate moving up the keyboard by one or two spaces. The student is then given 10 practice problems identifying intervals of whole and half steps above different starting notes. Finally, a bonus problem chains together multiple interval increments.

Whole Steps and Half Steps

For this worksheet, you will be asked to name whole and half steps above given notes. To do
this, you will need to use the keyboard provided. If it asks for a whole step, you should find the
given note on the keyboard and then move two spaces to the right. If it asks for a half step, you
should find the given note on the keyboard and move one space to the right. You should count
both black and white keys. To see this, look at the example below.

Ex. A whole step above D is E

Ex. A half step above C is Db/C#

1. A whole step above A is _____________

2. A half step above B is ______________

3. A whole step above E is _____________

4. A whole step above G is _____________

5. A half step above G is _____________

6. A whole step above F# is ____________

7. A half step above Gb is _____________

8. A whole step above B is _____________

9. A half step above D is ______________

Interval Math

For this section, you should follow the same instructions, but I am going to put it in the form of a
math problem. See the example below.

C + whole step = ____________

Bb + half step = ____________

C# + whole step = ___________

Ab + whole step = ___________

A + whole step = ____________

G + half step = ____________

D + whole step = ____________

B + whole step = ____________

F + half step = ____________

E + whole step = ____________

F# + half step = _____________

BONUS QUESTION: Let’s see how smart you really are…

Bb + whole step = ___________ + whole step = _____________ + half step = ____________ +

whole step = ____________ + whole step = _____________ + whole step = _____________ +

half step= _____________
