Mech 301 HW4

This document assigns mechanical engineering homework problems from a textbook due on November 10, 2023. The 5 problems involve calculating acceleration of a tank moving up an inclined plane, determining the height change of a U-tube accelerometer, finding the rotation rate to configure a U-tube of mercury, deriving a formula to calculate height changes in a three-legged manometer due to rotation, and determining the rotation rate and minimum pressure point for a 45-degree V-tube.

Mech 301 HW4 Assigned: November 03, 2023

Due: November 10, 2023

1. (Problem 2.141 in Book) The same tank from Prob. P2.139 is now
moving with constant acceleration up a 30° inclined plane, as in Fig.
P2.141. Assuming rigid-body motion, compute (a) the value of the
acceleration a, (b) whether the acceleration is up or down, and (c) the
gage pressure at point A if the fluid is mercury at 20°C.

2. (Problem 2.150 in Book) A cheap accelerometer, probably worth the price,

can be made from a U-tube as in Fig. P2.150. If L = 18 cm and D = 5 mm,
what will h be if ax = 6 m/s2 ? Can the scale markings on the tube be linear
multiples of ax ?

3. (Problem 2.155 in Book) For what uniform rotation rate in r/min about axis
C will the U-tube in Fig. P2.155 take the configuration shown? The fluid is
mercury at 20°C.

4. (Problem 2.159 in Book) The three-legged manometer in figure is

filled with water to a depth of 20 cm. All tubes are long and have equal
small diameters. If the system spins at an angular velocity of Ω about
the central tube, (a) derive a formula to find the change of height in the
tubes; (b) find the height in cm in each tube if Ω = 120 r/min. Hint:
The central tube must supply water to both the outer legs and total mass
is conserved.

5. (Problem 2.157 in Book) The 45° V-tube in Fig. P2.157 contains water
and is open at A and closed at C. What uniform rotation rate in r/min about
axis AB will cause the pressure to be equal at points B and C? For this
condition, at what point in leg BC will the pressure be a minimum?
