SECTION 2 - DESCRIPTION
2.1 INTRODUCTION
The Wartsila AVT13B bulkhead mounted and AVT13D deck mounted vacuum flush toilet has been designed
to be mechanically simple, operationally reliable, and stylish in appearance.
It uses differential air pressure to drive waste through the toilet and vacuum piping to the Treatment Plant or
intermediate collection tank.
By using only 1.0 litres of water per flush there is a dramatic reduction in the amount of wastewater.
Vacuum system piping is smaller and lighter than conventional gravity pipework, and can be run in any
convenient orientation and around obstacles. This means lower material cost, installation labour savings and
considerable design flexibility. In addition the performance of a vacuum system is unaffected by ship motion.
2.2 GENERAL
A flush control mechanism is mounted on top of the bowl and is controlled by the integral push-button.
The flush control mechanism can be removed from the top of the toilet without having to remove the bowl
from the wall. The sewage discharge valve and flush water valve can be reached though the rear of the toilet
for commissioning and maintenance.
Maintenance to the toilet can be made easy by use of the supplied isolating valve within the sewage transfer
line. This, along with the supplied isolator on the water inlet hose, allows for complete isolation of a single
toilet so that major items such as the SDV can be serviced with ease. This also allows for easy evacuation of
the pan without refilling so that work can be carried out on a dry pan.
Page 2-1
SECTION 2 - DESCRIPTION
The controls have timing circuitry, which allows the sewage discharge valve to open and empty the contents
of the bowl. Simultaneously the water valve opens causing water to flow into and rinse the bowl. The water
valve remains open long enough after the sewage discharge valve has closed for a residual pool of water to
accumulate in the bowl.
Page 2-2
SECTION 2 – DESCRIPTION
2.3.1 BOWL WITH INTEGRAL SEWAGE DISCHARGE VALVE (SDV) AND FLUSH CONTROL
MECHANISM (FCM)
Mounted below the pan is the rear discharging SDV, the outlet of which is connected to the vacuum transfer
line using the Wartsila supplied 90º elbow, or straight rubber coupling.
Built into the ceramic toilet bowl rim is a spray ring that provides thorough rinsing of the pan upon flushing.
The spray ring is connected via the flush control mechanism to a fresh water supply. The fresh water supply
connection is supplied complete with a vacuum breaker in the water inlet hose.
The FCM is supplied fully piped to the SDV within the bowl and all that is required at installation is
connection of the following:
Fresh water inlet using Wartsila supplied water inlet hose, complete with vacuum breaker and
isolating valve
Detailed descriptions of the internally mounted items are shown in the following sections.
Page 2-3
SECTION 2 - DESCRIPTION
Toilet
Bowl
Vacuum
Transfer
Pipework
The atmospheric air pressure in the bowl and the vacuum in the transfer line are separated by a pinch
membrane that collapses and closes under atmospheric pressure.
Applying vacuum to the air connection on the body actuates the valve. This opens the pinch membrane
exposing the contents of the bowl to the vacuum in the transfer line. The valve opens to full bore allowing
quick and efficient disposal of waste.
Once the contents have been evacuated the vacuum is released from the body connection and the pinch
membrane returns to its original position to seal the transfer line again.
The integral duckbill type non-return valve prevents backflow into the toilet bowl in the event of a vacuum
failure and back flow of waste.
Page 2-4
SECTION 2 – DESCRIPTION
When the pushbutton is pressed the flush control mechanism (FCM) apples a vacuum to the sewage
discharge valve (SDV) and the water valve causing them to operate. It includes an integral timing function so
that the toilet flush is the same every time.
Additionally, an integral low vacuum switch causes the FCM to latch in the ‘pressed’ condition if the transfer
piping has an insufficient vacuum level to operate the toilet. When the vacuum level is reestablished the toilet
will flush itself. Flush timing is not user adjustable.
Page 2-5
SECTION 2 - DESCRIPTION
The water valve opens at the same time as the sewage discharge valve (SDV) and closes a time after the
SDV closes. Its purpose is to flush the inside of the toilet bowl to ensure that all the waste is washed away
and to prime the bowl with 1.0 liters of water for the next use.
The length of time that the water valve stays open is controlled by the bleed plug. This is factory selected to
suit a water supply pressure towards the high end of the water pressure range. See section 1.3. If the supply
pressure is low replace the bleed plug with the supplied alternative plug.

SECTION 2 – DESCRIPTION
Page 2-7
SECTION 3 – INSTALLATION
SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION
3.1 GENERAL
A complete single toilet installation consists of either an AVT13B bulkhead mounted or an AVT13D deck
mounted bowl assembly with rubber discharge couplings, a toilet seat assembly, a water inlet hose assembly
(from fresh water supply to water valve) incorporating a vacuum breaker as standard, and bowl fastening kit.
All the above components and sub assemblies are supplied together in one packing box for final assembly
and installation on site.
Following installation of the bowl and inlet hose the only customer connections required are a 1.5 to 8 bar
fresh water supply and connection of the rubber discharge coupling to the vacuum transfer line.
By providing rear access to the bowl the sewage discharge valve may be accessed without removing the
bowl from its mountings.
By leaving connection of the toilets to the vacuum piping until just prior to commissioning the risk of damage
to toilets and components due to other installation work is minimised. However, it should be noted that dust
and dirt contamination of the toilet components could lead to failure of the toilet so steps should be taken to
minimise ingress of dust and dirt to the units before commissioning. Wartsila suggest that blanking of the
rear access to the bowl during commissioning would be a good procedure to adopt. This will stop any dust
getting into the cavity containing the FCM, SDV and water valve.
General Arrangement drawings for both the complete installation and the individual assemblies are included
in Section 6.
Full installation instructions for both the AVT13B and the AVT13D detailing mounting, vacuum tubing
connections (where required) and water hose connections are included in Section 3.2.
In addition a vacuum system piping design guide containing advice on the correct installation of the vacuum
transfer lines is included in Section 3.3.
To allow toilet isolation for maintenance or commissioning purposes, the isolating ball valve is to be fitted into
the ships vacuum pipework, for each toilet. Refer to drawings contained in section 6 of this manual.
In cases where the toilet is connected to an Overhead Horizontal Main (see R60428 “Vacuum System Piping
Design Guide” part 7), a non return valve (NRV) is to be fitted. This is to remove the possibility of any
excessive hydraulic pressure in the vacuum riser causing back flooding into the toilet. The NRV is to be fitted
as high as possible on the vertical riser to prevent the build-up of a fluid column. Wartsila reference for the
NRV is B15015.

SECTION 3 – INSTALLATION
Leave connection of the toilet outlet connection to the vacuum piping until just prior to commissioning
in order to minimise the risk of damage to toilets and components due to other installation work.
Ensure that the maximum flexibility of the rubber connector is utilised when connecting toilet outlet
connection to the vacuum piping. Also ensure that potential movement of the ship’s vacuum piping is
controlled such that it cannot apply forces to the connecting toilet outlet connection.

SECTION 4 - MAINTENANCE
4.1 GENERAL
None of the assemblies that make up an AVT13B or AVT13D vacuum toilet require regular maintenance.
It is recommended that complete operating mechanisms be carried as on board spares to allow any
maintenance required as a result of a problem occurring to be carried out with the minimum of delay.
When ordering spare parts or in any correspondence please provide the part number and item appropriate
sectional arrangement quoted on the appropriate Sectional Arrangement drawing included in Section 6.

Page 4-4
SECTION 5 - COMMISSIONING
The flush timing has been factory set to clear the toilet of waste and to admit a quantity of air into the transfer
pipework. This air is essential to the transport of the waste to the vacuum tank.
Timing is controlled by the needle valve in the vacuum pipework. Screw the needle in to increase the flush
time. Screw the needle out to reduce the flush time.
Needle Valve
Page 5-1
SECTION 5 - COMMISSIONING
The Flush Control Module, (FCM), incorporates a feature where the toilet will not flush if the system vacuum
is too low. This prevents hydraulic lockup of the transfer pipework. If the system vacuum is less than -0.35
bar the FCM will ‘latch’, and not flush. When the system vacuum recovers to more than -0.4 bar the FCM will
‘unlatch’, and flush the toilet.
The latch point is set with the needle valve on the end of the FCM. Screw the needle in to lower the ‘latch’
point. Screw the needle out to raise the ‘latch’ point.
Needle Valve
Page 5-2
SECTION 5 - COMMISSIONING
The Water valve has been factory set to dispense between 0.75 and .1.0 litres of water from a 3 bar fresh
water supply. This is the minimium quantity of water required to flush the toilet. The amount of water
dispensed is controlled by a Bleed Plug on the valve assembly. If the quantity of water dispensed is too low
fit the alternative Bleed Plug supplied with the toilet.
In extreme cases neither bleed plug may dispense an acceptable quantity of water. Bleed Plugs of other
sizes are available from Wartsila on request.

1. Introduction
This design guide provides advice on piping material, sizing, layout and mounting.
This document is for guidance only and National Authority and Classification
Society Rules applicable to the vessel under consideration must always be
followed.
2. Typical Installation
Figure 1.
It is recommended that each vertical main is connected to not more than 100
users and that additional shut off valves are installed on each deck to isolate
users in groups of not more than 25 toilets.
For transport pipes plastic pipes according to 3.1 or steel pipes according to 3.2
may be used.

Plastic pipes are generally suitable for use in accommodation areas but National
Authority and Classification Society Rules applicable to the vessel under
consideration should be consulted regarding its use in engine rooms, machinery
spaces and other heat producing areas.
3.2 Steel Pipes
Steel pipes of carbon steel (generally galvanised) and stainless steel of minimum
pressure rating PN10 according to the following dimensions may be used:-
Carbon Steel

Steel pipes are generally suitable for use in all accommodation areas, engine
rooms and machinery spaces although stainless steel offers a higher level of
hygiene in accommodation areas than carbon steel.
As with plastic pipe in 3.1 above National Authority and Classification Society
Rules applicable to the vessel under consideration must be consulted regarding
piping size and use.
4. Pipe Fittings
Pipe fittings should satisfy the same requirements as for the pipes in section 3.
There must be no projecting edges between pipe and rigid fitting or gaps between
jointed pipes that may obstruct smooth passage of the waste.
NB: A large gap is essential where flexible fittings are used to prevent transference
of piping forces
Correct jointing methods for rigid fittings are shown in figure 2.

R > 3d R > 3d
Figure 4.
Branch pipes should be connected to main pipes at an angle of 45° in the direction
of flow. Connections to a horizontal main should be made from above as shown in
figure 5.

6. Transport Pockets
Sewage is transported through the vacuum system as a slug that seals the pipe
work and has movement imparted on it as a result of the difference in pressure
ahead of and after it.
On horizontal mains the sewage will be affected by gravity and will tend to flatten
out. This breaks the seal in the pipe allowing air to flow over the top of the
sewage without imparting movement on it.
For this reason low points, termed transport pockets, need to be provided at
regular intervals to allow the slug to reform.
Figure 8.
A vertical lift of up to 3m may be made directly from the back of a toilet (WC) or
from the outlet of a vacuum interface valve (VIV). The rising pipe should be
straight with no changes of direction or section and should join the horizontal main
from above and downwards at a minimum angle of 45° from the horizontal. See
figure 9.

Figure 11.
It is recommended that vertical mains are not connected to each other via
horizontal mains but instead are connected directly as shown in figure 12.
Where it is unavoidable to use a common horizontal main or prevent a vertical
main entering a horizontal main then WCs or VIVs connected to that horizontal
main from below must have a non return valve fitted at the highest vertical point in
their lift to prevent back flow as shown in figure 13.
NRV

9. Pipe Clamping
When plastic pipes are employed in the transport system either plastic clamps or
steel clamps with rubber inserts should be used to support the pipework.
Allowance should be made for expansion of the pipe in the clamp. Manufacturers

data should be consulted for thermal expansion coefficients applicable to the pipe
being used.
On small installations where the total volume of the transport system pipework is
less than approximately 200 litres then it is recommended that a vacuum reservoir
tank, of a minimum of 160 litres, is installed to prevent excessive cycling of the
vacuum generation equipment due to rapid depletion of the vacuum in the system
pipework on activation of a WC or VIV.
The outlet connection of the vacuum reservoir must be at the tanks lowest point as
shown in figure 14.
INLET
IINLET
OUTLET OUTLET
It is recommended that the system is designed with the least number of fireproof
and watertight bulkhead and deck penetrations.
Figure 15
Figure 16
The system pipework should be tested without any WCs or VIVs fitted and with all
the subsequent open pipe ends blanked.
A vacuum of 0.7 bar should be created in the system and the leakage rate should
be such that after 1 hour the vacuum is not less than 0.48 bar.
ATTENTION!
BEFORE INSTALLATION OF THE HAMWORTHY KSE
VACUUM TOILET SYSTEM TAKES PLACE IT IS ESSENTIAL
THAT THE DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS SHOWN IN
ENCLOSED DOCUMENT R60428 HAVE BEEN
FOLLOWED, ESPECIALLY WITH REGARD TO PIPEWORK
DESIGN ON BOARD THE VESSEL.
