SPOS 9: General Setup

When running SPOS for the first time you will be asked to enter your ship type and dimensions (LPP,
Beam and Design draft) please enter this information accurately as these values will be used to
optimise your voyage calculations.

Next you should familiarise yourself with the top left corner of the SPOS window as below

Here you will find the 3 tabs for operating SPOS, the System Settings menu, the weather

subscription menu and the Help menu, pressing the arrow on the help menu will allow you to
access the full user manual via help content and the problem reporting menu, you can also access
the full user manual at any time by pressing F1

You should now open the System Settings menu, the Weather update tab will open, here you
should choose a weather update method for the receipt of forecast data for us in SPOS,

Folder will allow you to choose an import folder where forecast data can be taken from your emails
and placed, SPOS will read updates from this folder when the “update forecast” function is used,
additionally, a “subscription” folder can be chosen, when you create a subscription, the subscription
will be saved in this folder and can be sent via email to our subscription server [email protected]

Mail will allow you to automatically pull forecast updates from the email directly, this is done via the
Microsoft MAPI protocol and will require you to have a MAPI compatible client onboard such as
outlook.

HTTP will allow you to download updates directly from our server, this is the simplest method of
acquiring updates but requires the vessel to have an active internet connection onboard.

Once you have chosen an update method, please close the System Settings menu and open the
Weather subscription menu
Here you will choose the required
forecast areas for your current
voyage, to add areas to the
subscription box below, select an
area and press “add to
subscription” you can add up to 4
areas at once, and they can be
changed 24/7 for no additional
cost,
we recommend using 1-2 ocean
areas which cover your whole
voyage, and 1-2 Coastal maps
adjusting them in the subscription
as the voyage progresses.

Next please select the update

frequency, new SPOS forecasts
are created every 6 hours from 00 UTC, you may select to receive 1, 2 or all 4 of these daily.

When your subscription is complete, press the save button and follow the instructions which appear
on screen,

For the folder option, a “spossub.txt” file will be created in the chosen “subscription” folder, please
e-mail this file to [email protected] to activate your subscription.

For the Mail option, SPOS will make a call to your e-mail client using the MAPI protocol, this will
generate an e-mail draft on screen with the subscription information attached and our subscription
server address included, please press send to this E-mail to activate your subscription

For the Http option, pressing Save will close the Weather subscription menu, you can now use the
update forecast button and download your chosen subscription immediately.

Once your forecast data is downloaded via Http, or applied to SPOS from E-mail via folder or MAPI,
you will find the latest forecast data time and date in the Source section under the Weather tab, you
can view the weather data on your chart directly by enabling various Weather options in the
Elements section.

You can also keep your SPOS application up to date using the above subscription method, go to
System Settings > updates and create an update subscription, update files will be sent with your
forecasts and SPOS will notify you when a new patch has been compiled.

The basic setup of SPOS is now complete, you can now create/import route templates in the input
tab and use them to calculate voyage optimisations in the routing tab, for further details on creating
and updating a voyage please see our Voyage update guide or the User Manual within SPOS.
