The document discusses autonomous robots and distributed autonomous robotic systems (DARS). It defines DARS as systems consisting of multiple autonomous robotic agents that work cooperatively to perform tasks. DARS aim to achieve flexibility and robustness compared to single sophisticated robots. The document outlines some benefits of autonomous robots like improved productivity and safety. It also presents estimates showing growing demand for robots in industries like agriculture and forecasts Asia's market growth.

ABSTRACT

Though flexible and robust robo9c systems have been required in various
fields, sufficient func9onality has not yet been realized with currently available
technologies in spite of all the efforts to develop intelligent robots. Instead of
single-sophis9cated-robot-oriented researches, distributed autonomous
robo9c systems (DARS) have recently aZracted the aZen9on of many
researchers as a new approach for flexible and robust systems. In this chapter,
the trends of DARS are described introducing their background and
mo9va9ons. Then, the subjects on DARS are men9oned, and approaches and
assump9ons in DARS researches are classified.

What are DRAS?

Distributed Autonomous Robo9c Systems are the systems whieh

consist of mul9ple autonomous robo9c agents into which required
func9on is distributed. In order to to achieve given missions, the
agents work coopera9vely to operate and/or process tasks. The most
important feature of DARS is that each system is a distributed system
composed of mul9ple agents. Depending on what the agent is and
how the system is distributed, there are various types of DARS.
Func9on of processing or control, management, and even decision
making mayor may not be distributed into mul9ple agents. On the
other hand, the informa9on and knowledge which are necessary for
agents' ac9on or processing may also be distributed into mul9ple
agents.
