Teacher welcome

Teacher Paul: Hi there, and welcome to Evolve Digital, Level 2. It’s great to have you, and I
hope you’re excited to learn more English!
My name is Paul, and I’m an English teacher. I’m going to tell you about the units in this course,
so you’ll see me whenever you start and finish a unit.
Let’s start with Unit 1. This unit is about connections. Connections are the ways in which things
and people are related to each other. So, we’re going to learn to talk about the people in your
life and your personal possessions, which are the things you own. But that’s just the vocabulary!
We’re also going to learn some grammar. We’ll start with a review of the verb be and learn how
to talk about possession with possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns. We’re also going
to learn how to ask about possessions using Whose?
Lesson 3 show how to greet new people and people that you already know. This lesson also
focuses on how to start conversations and how to show interest and surprise when you’re
talking to someone.
Lesson 4 is about how to write emails and how to introduce yourself.
Finally, we’ll review everything from the unit.

Jessica: Yes, I am the first-born child. I’m also the only child.
Arleen: I am, out of five of us. Two brothers and two sisters.
Benjamin: I’m not the first-born child. I have two sisters.

Narrator: Questions with be.
Narrator: [video title] How many cookies?
[A young monster, Rosa, is in a store. She walks to an older monster. The older monster is a
clerk – he is working.]
Rosa: [crying] Where’s my mommy?
Clerk 1: Oh! Are you lost?
[Rosa is still crying. She nods her head.]
Clerk 1: Come with me.
[Rosa holds Clerk 1’s hand and they walk to the check-out counter.]
Clerk 1: OK, let’s find your mommy.
[Clerk 1 puts Rosa on the counter, near another clerk.]
Clerk 2: Oh, hello. Who are you? What’s your name?
Rosa: [still crying] I’m Rosa Rogers
Clerk 2: Hi, Rosa! I’m Cathy. [pointing to Clerk 1] This is Miguel. What’s your address?
Rosa: 91 Main Street. It’s a blue house! I want to go home! [Rosa reaches for her teddy bear
and sees a jar of cookies next to her.]
Clerk 1: Don’t cry. [reaching for the cookies and showing them to Rosa] Uh, uh, here’s a cookie.
Clerk 2: [Rosa stops crying and eats a cookie. She is smiling now.] A blue house? Great! How
many people are in your family, Rosa?
Rosa: Four – me, my brother, my dad, and… [starts crying again] my mommy! [Rosa looks
back at the jar of cookies.]
Clerk 2: And where are they now?
Rosa: Well, my dad and my brother are at home, and my mommy…. [starts crying again, even
more upset now] where’s my mommy?
Clerk 1: [holding the jar of cookies to Rosa] Cookie?
Rosa: Yes, please. [Rosa is smiling again. She takes the cookie jar and pours all of the cookies
into her mouth.]
Clerk 2: [making an announcement] Mrs. Rogers, please come to –
[Another clerk comes near.]

Clerk 3: Hello, again, Rosa. How many cookies this time?
[Rosa’s mom arrives.]
Rosa’s mom: Oh, Rosa! Not again! [Rosa smiles, holding the empty cookie jar.]

Male Rabbit: No! They’re not her gloves. They’re his gloves.
Attendant: Oh, sorry.
[The Male Cat takes the red gloves. The Attendant hands the Female Cat a pair of pink gloves
and the two cats walk away. Coats fall down behind the Attendant.]
[A Male Elephant approaches the desk. We see a Female Giraffe nearby.]
Male Elephant: That’s my scarf – it’s green.

Attendant: OK. Here’s your scarf.
[The Rabbit points to the Female Giraffe behind him.]
Male Rabbit: That’s not his scarf! It’s her scarf!
Female Giraffe: Yes, that’s my scarf.
Attendant: Oh, I’m so sorry!
[The Male Elephant and the Female Giraffe walk away. More coats fall to the floor.]
Centipede 1 and 2: Hello, we want our coats, please.
[The Attendant looks over the desk to see the Centipedes. There are some Squirrels nearby.]
Attendant: OK, here they are.
[The Attendant reaches over the desk and hands them two small coats.]
Centipede 1 and 2: They’re not our coats! Those are their coats. [The Centipedes hand the
coats to two Squirrels behind them.]
Squirrels: Yes! They’re our coats. Thank you!
[The Attendant hands the Centipedes the correct coats. A Male Monkey walks to the desk.]
Male Monkey: Where’s my cell phone, please?
Attendant: I don’t know.
[The Attendant and the Monkey look into the closet]
Male Monkey: That’s my cell phone! Listen! [a cell phone rings] I can hear its ringtone!
[The Attendant looks through the pile of coats on the floor and finds the cell phone. He hands it
to the Monkey.]
[The Rabbit comes back.]
Male Rabbit: Hmm. Now, where’s my umbrella?
[The Attendant looks under the large pile of coats.]
Attendant: Here’s your umbrella!
Rabbit: Ah, perfect!

[The Attendant hands the Centipedes the correct coats. A Male Monkey walks to the desk.]
Male Monkey: Where’s my cell phone, please?
Attendant: I don’t know.
[The Attendant and the Monkey look into the closet]
Male Monkey: That’s my cell phone! Listen! [a cell phone rings] I can hear its ringtone!

Elephant: That’s my scarf.
Narrator: Possessive adjectives go before a noun.
Female Cat: Can I have my gloves, please?
Narrator: The form of the possessive adjective is the same before a singular or a plural noun.

Narrator: Possessive adjectives show the person or people that have the thing.

[The teacher holds up one painting. It shows the blue ocean at the top and the beach on the
bottom.]
Karen: That’s my painting. That’s mine!
Teacher: Good job, Karen. I like it. Very nice beach. [The teacher hands Karen her painting.]
Joe: Did he say “beach”? [Joe looks confused.]
Teacher: I’m not sure about this beach painting. Ben, is this yours? [The teacher holds up a
painting showing that only half is painted.]
Ben: Yes, that’s mine.
Teacher: The ocean’s good, but you need to finish it, OK?
Ben: OK. Thanks.
Joe: The “ocean”? [Joe looks more confused.]
[Zak whispers to Marta.]
Zak: I hope he likes ours!

Teacher: OK. This painting is excellent. The blue is really nice!
Twin sisters: Our painting was excellent! We did it! It’s ours!
[Karen whispers to Ben.]
Karen: I don’t think they’re very good at art. It’s not theirs. I bet it’s Joe’s painting. He always
gets good grades. I’m sure it’s his.
Ben: Well, Akiko looks happy. Maybe it’s hers.
Teacher: Here’s your painting, Akiko. Very good!
Teacher: Hmm. Now, whose painting is this? [The teacher holds up a painting, but we cannot
see what it looks like.] This is very interesting… There’s no ocean… And there’s no beach...
Joe: Uh oh. No ocean and no beach… That painting is mine.
Teacher: But there is a beautiful... peach!

[Possessive adjectives appear in black next to the Possessive pronouns in brown:
my – mine
your – yours
his – his
her – hers
our – ours
their – theirs]
You can use possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns to answer questions with Whose.
[The teacher holds up a painting.]

[text on screen] Karen: That’s my painting. That’s mine. [My and Mine are highlighted]
Narrator: Use a noun after a possessive adjective.
[The text “That’s my painting” has painting highlighted.]
Don’t use a noun after a possessive pronoun.
[The text “That’s mine painting” appears and the word painting is removed to show the correct
sentence – “That’s mine.”]

[We see city streets with heavy rain falling. Inside the apartment, Eduardo is looking out the
window while Rick is cooking using a wok]
Eduardo: Look at that rain!
Rick: Is it bad out there?
Eduardo: Yeah, it's really bad. Wow, it smells great. [Rick is in the kitchen stirring food in a hot
pan]
Rick: Oh, good, it's my grandparents' favorite. They make it all the time in South Korea. Hey, is
that mine? [pointing to a glass of water on the table]

Eduardo: No that's mine, that's yours.

Rick: Thanks. Where are Noemi and Christina? This is ready. [indicating the food he cooked]

Eduardo: They're here. [a phone rings]


Rick: Yup, it's Noemi. Hey, Noemi.
Noemi: [we hear her through the phone] Rick, where's Eduardo? Where's his phone? We're
downstairs in the rain. Open the door.
Rick: Eduardo, what's wrong with your phone?
Eduardo: Oh no! [his phone screen shows “Noemi: 5 missed calls”] Five calls? No sound.
[Rick hands Eduardo his phone. Eduardo smiles and gestures to Rick that he is going to joke
with his friends]
[on the phone, to Noemi] Um, yes? Can I help you?

Noemi: [through the phone] Come on, Eduardo. Let us in.

[Eduardo and Rick laugh at Eduardo’s joke]


Eduardo: Do you have food with you?

Noemi: [through the phone] We have dessert.

Eduardo: Dessert? Mmm. What is it?

Noemi and Christina: [through the phone] Eduardo!

Eduardo: OK, OK. [Eduardo pushes the buzzer to let them into the building. There is a knock at
the door]
Christina: We're here! Let us in.
[Eduardo opens the door and lets Christina and Noemi in. Christina has a wet umbrella. Both
are wearing rain coats]
Eduardo: Well hello ladies, and how are you this evening?
Christina: Fine, there's a lot of rain out there. [She shakes her wet umbrella.]
Eduardo: Oh no no, over here! Umbrellas go here. [He shows her the place for umbrellas.]
Christina: Very Eduardo.
Eduardo: Hey, what do you mean?
Christina: Everything has its place in your apartment.
Eduardo: OK, true.
Rick: Come on, dinner's ready. [We see a beautiful plate of food]

Noemi: Oh, great. I love this!
Eduardo: Oh, you know the Yoon family special?
