SECTION – A
Read the given passage and answer the following questions 1 to 5 that follow:
Starch is a polymeric carbohydrate consisting of a number of α  D  ( )  Glucopyranose
units joined by Glycosidic bonds. This polysaccharide is produced by most green plants
which acts as a source of reserve energy. It is sparingly soluble in water and the most
common carbohydrate in human diet. During digestion starch is transformed in to maltose,
which then hydrolyses to glucose. Glucose content in blood is regulated by the hormone
insulin.
1. Glucose on fermentation in the presence of Zymase under anaerobic conditions gives
compound ‘A’ which can be used as a fuel in fuel cell. The ΔG o for combustion of ‘A’ at
1atm and 298K is -1300 KJ /mol. Calculate Eocell.
2. Draw the Haworth projection formula for the disaccharide obtained during digestion of
starch.
3. What class of protein does insulin belong to?
4. If 0.05M glucose solution is isotonic with 3g/L of an unknown, non-electrolytic compound
(A) with empirical formula CH2O. Find the molecular formula of the compound (A).
5. Give one characteristic feature of the colloidal solution obtained when the polymeric
carbohydrate is mixed with dispersion medium that is water.

Questions 6 -10 are short answer questions:

6. Based on CFT deduce the configuration of ‘d’ orbitals of the metal ion in the complex
[CoCl6]3- and calculate the magnetic moment.
7. Give the composition and one use of misch metal.
