COURSE DESCRIPTION
Drawing & Painting I is an introductory art course designed for any student grades 9-12, who has had no previous
experience. It is a ½ credit, semester long course for the student who would like to focus on 2-D creation. The
course is designed to provide students with the foundations of artistic expression. Students will learn how to
manipulate the design elements and principles of art, as well as use a variety of media to communicate ideas
creatively. Most if not all projects will be done in black and white during this course using a variety of media such
as pencil, charcoal, ebony pencils, black and white paint, or india ink. Drawing & Panting I applies cooperative and
independent, as well as differential learning strategies in its approach to art making, art history, criticism and
aesthetics. Drawing & Painting I will provide students with the foundation skills needed to further study and
practice upon a passing grade and teacher recommendation to higher level art classes.
Classroom Expectations:

Grading policy: Each student is graded on an individual basis. No cross-class comparisons will be made. I grade
on my expectations of you and your growth as an individual. Your projects will be graded using a Scale or Rubric
for Grading Art given at the start of each project with the following criteria in mind:
Elements of Art – showing use of the elements and principals of design in your work
Effort- this means always striving for your personal best
Craftsmanship- you have taken your time and done a careful job using materials properly
Creativity/Originality- you have developed your own idea and not copied someone else's
Following instructions- you have met the criteria outlined for each assignment
Curriculum
Elements: Line, shape, form, texture, color, value, space
Principles: Unity, balance, emphasis, contrast/variety, pattern, movement, rhythm
Theories: Mimetic (from Nature), Expressionistic (from self), Pragmatic (for audience), Procedural(formal
criteria)
Media: pencil, pen, collage, colored pencil, charcoal, tempera /acrylic paint, mixed media
Units of study: Line, composition, value, perspective, color/painting, figure drawing & portraiture
Attendance:
1. Absences & tardies interfere with your learning & success. Be here, on time. 4 tardies warrants a referral.
2. Absences are excused by a note or phone call from parent to the office. If you are absent, it is YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY to find out what you missed & make it up ASAP.
Deadlines: Projects are usually due the next day after the last day we work on it in class. Late work will be
evaluated occurring to handbook policies. Please communicate difficulties/emergencies with me as needs arise.
Open Studio: Check with teacher in advance regarding times and days
Materials: There is a $20.00 art fee for materials for successful completion of the course. *Please communicate
difficulties/emergencies with me. Please pay fees to the Bookstore.
Supplies Provided:
1. 9” x 12” Sketchbook
2. Colored pencils
3. Drawing pencil (s), eraser
4. Variety of drawing media
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Be respectful of all people in the classroom. Each student will be respectful of the teacher and will not impede
classroom instruction through disruptive behavior or tardy entry to class. Be respectful of other students, and treat
others in a mature and thoughtful manner.
Be respectful of the art materials. Respect all art materials. They are to be treated in a professional manner.
Take proper care of the brushes. Do not be wasteful of paint and paper. Do not write on the tables. Ask permission
to use or borrow supplies and open supply cabinets. Graffiti will not be tolerated.
Effort. Students are expected to participate fully in all classroom activities. No student is expected to be an
accomplished artist upon entry into the class. The expectation is that the student will develop skills, through
practice, during the year. Students will use all class time for ART class work only. Be creative & try your best!
Behavior in the classroom. Students are expected to follow all school rules in the classroom. No behavior that
endangers students and those around them as well as putting creative endeavors at risk is acceptable. Students
will sign out to leave class for restroom or other situations. All students must have a written pass when leaving or
entering the classroom during instruction time.
Food. School policy states that food, gum, and beverages are not allowed in the classroom. Students are not to
bring those items into the classroom.
Preparation. BE ON TIME. You will bring your sketchbook, pen, and pencil to class every day.
Communication. If you are having a problem with this class do not assume that I know. It is your
responsibility to communicate with me, so that you will have a successful experience. I can not help with what I do
not know. NO CELL PHONES PERMITTED IN THE CLASSROOM unless we are using them for instructional
purposes. 1st offense warning, 2nd phone confiscated and sent to the front office.
Class Dismissal. When the bell rings you will be dismissed by the teacher only after all supplies and materials
are accounted for, stored properly and the room is cleaned.
Infractions of Rules:
ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO DO NOT PROPERLY USE THE CLASS PERIOD OR SUPPLIES.
Examples of behavior that would warrant alternative assignments are misuse of art materials, distracting behavior or
disrespectful behavior.

I am delighted about your interest in the fine arts and about working with you this year. Hopefully, this syllabus
has provided sufficient information regarding curriculum, expectations and grading policy. The keys to success in
this program are regular attendance, a positive attitude and good work habits. If you have questions, please ask. I
read email daily and respond promptly. I check my mail box at school daily.
All grades can be viewed on the InfiniteCampus website. This is an excellent way to check on progress and
assignment due dates throughout the marking period.
I anticipate that this class will be an exciting, productive experience and look forward to sharing art work with

Course goals
1. Demonstrate basic skill building in drawing and painting production, applying the fundamentals of the elements and principles of fine
art and design.
2. Experience not only art production, but also artistic philosophy, art criticism, and art history.

Course Objectives
1. Students will design individual artworks based on design elements and principles as well as responses to historical, philosophical and
cultural prompts.
2. Students will use appropriate vocabulary in the verbal and written description and analysis of their work.
3. Students will participate in historical and cultural discussions about the philosophy of art.
4. Student s will create artwork of acceptable quality using the techniques of graphite drawing, pen and ink, colored pencil, pastels,
water color, tempera, multi-media collage, ceramics, 3-d media, and acrylic paints. Using materials properly at all times,

I understand the rules, expectations and consequences of this class. I also understand how I am
