1)Admixtures are chemical compounds or materials that are added to concrete during its

mixing or placing to enhance or modify its properties. They are used in concrete technology
to achieve various desired characteristics in the hardened concrete or to improve the
workability, durability, and performance of the concrete mix.

2)Pozzolanic materials are siliceous and aluminous materials, which in themselves possess little or no
cementitious value, but will, in finely divided form and in the presence of moisture, chemically react
with calcium hydroxide liberated on hydration, at ordinary temperature, to form compounds,
possessing cementitious properties

The reaction can be shown as

Pozzolan + Calcium Hydroxide + Water → C – S – H (Gel)

• This reaction is called pozzolanic reaction.

• The characteristic feature of pozzolanic reaction is firstly slow, with the result that heat of
hydration and strength

development will be accordingly slow.

• The reaction involves the consumption of Ca(OH)2 and not

production of Ca(OH)2.

• The reduction of Ca(OH)2 improves the durability of cement

paste by making the paste dense and impervious.

 Natural Pozzolans

• Clay and Shales

• Opalinc Cherts

• Diatomaceous Earth

• Volcanic Tuffs and Pumicites.

 Artificial Pozzolans

• Fly ash

• Blast Furnace Slag

• Silica Fume

• Rice Husk ash

• Metakaoline

• Surkhi

Fly Ash:

 Fly ash or pulverised fuel ash (PFA) is the residue from the combustion of pulverized coal
collected by the mechanical dust collectors or electrostatic precipitators or separators from
the fuel gases of thermal power plants.

 The fly ash particles are spherical (which is advantageous from the water requirement point
of view) and have a very high fineness.

 High fineness, low carbon content , good reactivity are the essence of good fly ash.

 The fly ash derived from bituminous coal is mainly siliceous and is known as Class F fly
ash.only poz prop

 Sub-bituminous coal and lignite result in high lime ash, known as Class C fly ash.rich in CaO
both cem and poz prop

Consists of silica alumina and CaO

GGBS
by product obtained during the production of iron from iron ore
 alkaline medium required to initiate the hydration is provided by lime, sodium hydroxide or
gypsum.

 The replacement of cement with GGBS will reduce the unit water content necessary to
obtain the same slump.

Strength gain continues for long duration of time

Reduced hoh

Increased resistance to chemical attacks

Reduced perm to ext agencies

SILICAFUME

 Silica fume is also referred to as microsilica or condensed silica fume.

 It is a by-product of the manufacture of silicon and ferrosilicon alloys from high-purity quartz
and coal in a submerged arc electric furnace.

 The escaping gaseous SiO oxidizes and condenses in the form of extremely fine spherical
particles of amorphous silica (SiO2 ) hence the name silica fume.

 Silica in the form of glass(amorphous) is highly reactive and the smallness of the particles
speeds up the reaction with calcium hydroxide produced by the hydration of Portland
cement.

The very small particles of silica fume enter the space between the particles of cement and thus
improve packing

Compr strenth and flex strength are inc

Resistance to abrasion n erosion

Reduces bleeding

RICE HUSK ASH

Burnin rice husk in controlled manner

Dec perm, hoh and inc resis to chem attacks

SURKHI

Surkhi is an artificial pozzolana made by powdering bricks or burnt clay balls

This admixture is known to reduce the temperature rise during
hydration in a mass cement concrete and reduce cracking.

METAKAOLIN

derived from the calcination (high-temperature heating) of kaolin clay, which is a naturally
occurring mineral

shows high pozzolanic reactivity and reduction in Ca(OH)2
