Model Answer of Quiz (2 – C) [10 Marks]


Let 𝑺 = {𝒖𝟏 , 𝒖𝟐 , 𝒖𝟑 } be a set of vectors in 𝑅 3 where, 𝑢1 = (1 , 2 , 3), 𝑢2 = (0 , 1 , 2) and 𝑢3 = (−1 , 0 , 1).
i) Determine whether the vector 𝑣 = (1 , −2 , 2) is a linear combination of the vectors 𝑢1 , 𝑢2 and 𝑢3 or not.
ii) Show that the set 𝑺 is a spanning set for the vector space 𝑹𝟑 or not.
iii) Show whether the set 𝑺 is basis for 𝑹𝟑 or not.
iv) Is it possible to construct an orthonormal set of vectors using the set 𝑺 ?Why?
Solution
i) We need to find scalar 𝒄𝟏 , 𝒄𝟐 𝒂𝒏𝒅, 𝒄𝟑 such that we can write; 𝒗 = 𝒄𝟏 𝒖𝟏 + 𝒄𝟐 𝒖𝟐 + 𝒄𝟑 𝒖𝟑
Therefore, (𝟏 , −𝟐 , 𝟐) = 𝒄𝟏 (𝟏 , 𝟐 , 𝟑) + 𝒄𝟐 (𝟎 , 𝟏 , 𝟐) + 𝒄𝟑 (−𝟏 , 𝟎 , 𝟏)
(𝟏 , −𝟐 , 𝟐) = (𝒄𝟏 − 𝒄𝟑 , 𝟐𝒄𝟏 + 𝒄𝟐 , 𝟑𝒄𝟏 + 𝟐𝒄𝟐 + 𝒄𝟑 )
The vector previous equation produces the following non-homogenous system of equations (𝑨𝑪 = 𝑩),

𝒄𝟏 − 𝒄𝟑 = 𝟏 𝟏 𝟎 −𝟏
𝟐𝒄𝟏 + 𝒄𝟐 = −𝟐 } , 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆, |𝑨| = | 𝟐 𝟏 𝟎|=𝟎
𝟑𝒄𝟏 + 𝟐𝒄𝟐 + 𝒄𝟑 = 𝟐 𝟑 𝟐 𝟏

Therefore, the system has an infinite number of solutions or has no solution, ???? Therefore,

(2 1 0 | −2) −3𝑅1 + 𝑅3

The last row shows contradiction (𝟎 ≠ 𝟕), so the system has no solution and this means that we cannot
find 𝒄𝟏 , 𝒄𝟐 𝒂𝒏𝒅, 𝒄𝟑 to write the vector 𝒗 as a linear combination of vectors of 𝒖𝟏 , 𝒖 𝒂𝒏𝒅, 𝒖𝟑 .

ii) 𝑺 is not spanning set in 𝑹𝟑 because, form (i) we found a vector 𝒗 = (1 , −2 , 2) ∈ 𝑅 3 that cannot
be written as a linear combination of vectors of 𝑺.

iii) The set 𝑺 is not basis for 𝑹𝟑 because the set 𝑺 is not spanning in 𝑹𝟑 .
iv) It is not possible to construct an orthonormal set of vectors using the set 𝑺 because 𝑺 is not orthogonal.
