Balanza - Lab Ex1

The document outlines the procedures for setting up and leveling a total station for a surveying lab exercise. It describes establishing a temporary benchmark, setting up the tripod over the benchmark, attaching the tribrach and coarse leveling the instrument. It also summarizes the basic operation of a total station, including turning on the instrument, inputting file and station information, orienting to zero, sighting the prism to measure distance and angle. The conclusion states that the students successfully set up, leveled, and operated a total station to collect coordinate data.

Setting up, Level and Basic Operation of Total Station

Laboratory Exercise No. 1
GEng 123n – Property Surveys

Name: Jo-ana Marie R. Balanza Date Conducted: Sept. 20, 2022

Course and Year: BSGE-2 Date Submitted: Sept. 29, 2022

I. Introduction
An accurate, professional measurement called a property survey, also known as a boundary
survey, is performed to determine or validate the position of the land on which a residence is situated.
Accurate measurements are essential to every construction project, and the total station is one of the
most crucial surveying tools available today. This sophisticated gadget gives surveyors a useful time-
saving tool for tasks like sighting utility lines and setting building corners.

II. Objective(s):

a) To outline the procedures of setting up and level of a

total station.
b) To summarize the basic operation of a total station.

III. Instruments and Accessories:

Total Station, Tripod, Range Pole, Prism.

IV. Procedure:

Part 1. Setup and Level

• Gather the Survey Equipment, Stake, and Tools.

• Establish a New Temporary Benchmark.

• Set-up the Tripod.

• Set the Instrument on the Tripod.

• Level the bubbles parallel the bubble to the legs of the tripod

• Attach the Tribrach and Coarse Level the Tripod Over the Benchmark.

• Continue to Level and Adjust the Tribrach as Necessary

Part 2. Basic operation of Total Station

• Turn on the instruments by pressing and holding the “on” button then press the menu and create a
file input a filename next input station then the coordinates and then the angle orient the instrument
into 0.00 by the used of the compass the students placed it in zero degree because it’s a assumed
azimuth. Then site the prism and measure the distance and the angle.
• Calibration must be completed before coordinates can be obtained ̈ 3 possible calibrations: ̈
Backsight by angle: must know instrument coordinates and have a landmark/target at a known
azimuth ̈ Backsight by coordinate: must know instrument coordinates and have mirror target set
on a position of known coordinates ̈

The students need to establish a new point of reference with a temporary benchmark. Using a small
nail tapped into the center of a wooden stake, pound the stake into, and as flush as possible, with the ground.
for adjusting the tribrach screws - focus on two at a time. Get the bubble in the middle of an axis between
two screws, then use the third screw to bring it into the middle. To extend the tripod to a height near your
neck and chin, remove the tripod leg clamps while holding the tripod in place. Leg clamps should be
tightened. Place the tripod over your benchmark stake with the legs evenly spaced at two to three feet
apiece. Your tripod's top should be generally horizontal and parallel to a horizontal plane. The secret to
effective surveys is a level instrument. To change the tripod's level as needed, the tribrach has a level
bubble and leveling screws. The surveyor can observe the tribrach's center and accurately put its
crosshairs over the survey marker nail on the stake using an optical plummet on the tribrach. Place the
tripod's tribrach in the middle and fasten it using the screw that connects a tripod. Place the crosshairs of
the optical plummet over the center of the nail while holding two tripod legs and attempting to keep the
tripod as level as possible. To ensure a solid connection with the ground, place an equal amount of
pressure with your foot along each tripod leg. Adjust the height of two tripod legs while looking at the level
bubble to get it nearly in the middle. Then, for a bubble level that is more accurate, use the tribrach
leveling screws. To achieve the most level and centered position, switch back and forth between the
optical plummet and level bubble. To move the tribrach for a more central crosshair position, you might
need to unscrew the center tripod screw. The Total Station should be taken out of the carrying container
and fixed to the top. tribrach/instrument lock of the tribrach. Turn the total station so that the face-plate is
parallel to the two tribrach leveling screws to precisely level the instrument. The left and right trunnions as
well as the sights will be adjusted using these two screws (forward and back). Press the accept button
once the instrument has been successfully leveled so it can carry out its compensatory function.

V. Conclusion

Total station is an optical instrument generally used in construction, surveying, and civil engineering. It
is useful for measuring horizontal angle, vertical angle, and distance and it does by analyzing the slope
between itself and a specific point. The total station is a combination of a digital theodolite, an electronic
distance measuring device (EDM), and a microprocessor with a memory unit. This combination makes it
potential to find out the coordinates of a reflector that aligns the instrument crosshairs on the reflector as well
as measures the vertical and horizontal angles and slope distances. In conclusion the students set up, level
and operate a total station.
