your life in the past.

HOW TO WRITE A NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH

A narrative paragraph follows the normal structure of a paragraph with a topic sentence,
supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence.
1. Topic Sentence:
Topic sentence tells the reader what the story is about and when and where the story took place.
So, when you write a topic sentence, you have to write about when or where the story that you
want to talk about took place.
For example:
 Last year I went on an amazing trip with my family.
 Yesterday, I saw an accident in front of my house.

2. Supporting Sentences:
 tell what happened.
 Explain the sequence of events (how step-by-step the event took place.)
For example: First, I left home at 8am and I was on my way to school.
- supporting sentences includes sensory details like what the writer saw, heard, smelled, or
tasted.
For example: Suddenly, I heard a loud crash. I looked behind me and saw someone lying on the
road.
- It could include include also the writers feelings (emotional details) during the events.
For example: I felt very scared as I saw that accident.

3. Concluding Sentence:
- The concluding sentence summarizes the story.
- It includes the writer’s opinion about what the writer learned from the event or
experience.
For example: To sum up, that was one of the scariest experience I have never had.

***NOTE:
- In a narrative paragraph, we use the grammar simple past because we are talking about
actions and events that started and finished in the past.
- We could use past simple and past continuous to talk about irrupted and actions which
means that an action happened in the past while another action was also happening.
For example:
- I was riding my bike to school when suddenly I heard a loud crash.
- I was cooking food while my mom made me coffee.

My best vacation
Last summer, my family and I had the best vacation ever. We went to Kep. On the day of the
trip, we woke up very early. By 6am, we already left Phnom Penh. We traveled by our own car.
Then, as I drove along the road, I saw beautiful views of the trees and mountains. It was very
fresh and relaxing. Later on, we arrived at Kep around lunchtime. We had lunch by the Kep
beach, and danced along to some music. We also swam. The water was cold. My father built us a
huge sandcastle. My mother was sunbathing while we played beach volleyball . When the sun
was about to set, we got on our car and returned back home. In short, that vacation was really fun
and relaxing and I can’t wait to go back again someday.
