Unit I

3. A steel rod of 1 m long and 20 mm x 20 mm in cross section is subjected to a tensile force of 40 kN.
Determine the elongation of the rod if modulus of elasticity for the rod material is 200 GPa.
4. A steel bar of cross sectional area 200 mm2 is loaded as shown in the figure.

find the minimum diameter of the shaft.
9. A solid shaft is subjected to a torque of 15 KN-m. Find the necessary dia. Of shaft, if the allowable shear
tress is 40 MPa. The allowable twist is 1 degree for every 20 diameter length of the shaft.
10. A solid circular shaft of 60 mm dia. Is transmitting 30 KW at 1440 rpm. Find the intensity of the induced
shear stress in the shaft.
11. The external and internal dia. of a hollow shaft are 40 cm and 20 cm. Find the maximum torque which
the shaft can transmit, if the angle of twist is not the exceed 2 degree in a length of 20 meters. Take
C=70 GPa.
12. A hollow shaft has an external dia Of 50 cm and internal dia of 300 mm the angle of twist for 200 mm
of its length is 1 degree. Find the maximum torque transmitted. Take C = 70 GPa.
13. Briefly explain rivets and riveted joints and bolted joints.

18. A cantilever beam of 1.5m long carries point loads of 1 KN, 2 KN, & 3 KN at 0.5m, 1.0m, 1.5m from the
fixed end. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam.
19. A simply supported beam of 6m long is carrying a uniformly distributed load of 5 KN/m over a length of
3m from the right end. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam and
calculate maximum bending moment on the section.

31. If water is flowing through a pipe of 100 mm dia With an average velocity of 10 m/s. determine the
rate of discharge of the water. Also determine the velocity of the water at the other end of the pipe if
the dia of the pipe is gradually changed to 200 mm.
32. The diameter of a pipe changes from 200 mm at a section 5 m above datum to 50 mm at a section 3 m
above datum. The pressure of water at first section is 500 kPa. If the velocity of flow at the first section
is 1 m/s, determine the intensity of pressure at the second section.
33. A pipe 5 m long is inclined at an angle of 150 with the horizontal. The smaller section of the pipe, which
is at lower level, is of 80 mm diameter and the larger section of the pipe is of 240 mm diameter.
Determine the difference of pressures between the two sections, if the velocity of water at the smaller
section is 1 m/s.
34. What do you understand by the term discharge? Explain the equation of continuity of a liquid flow.
35. With the help of figure, explain how you will measure pressure head by simple manometer.
36. Sketch and explain how you will measure discharge with the help of venturimeter.
37. A venturimeter with a 150 mm dia at inlet and 100 mm at throat is laid with its axis horizontal and is
used for measuring the flow of oil of sp. Gravity 0.9. The oil mercury monometer shows a gauge
difference of 200 mm. Assume coefficient of meter as 0.98. Calculate the discharge.
38. Find the loss of head, due to friction in a pipe of 500 mm diameter and 1.5 kilometers long. The
velocity of water in the pipe is 1 m/s. Take coefficient of friction s 0.005.
39. Explain with the help of sketch, working of reciprocation pump.

constant pressure from 250 C to 2000 C, estimate the heat added, ideal work done and change in
internal energy. Also calculate the pressure and the final volume, if the initial volume was 2 m 3.
63. A quantity of air has a volume of 0.4 m 3 at a pressure of 5 bar and a temperature of 800 C. It is
expanded isothermally to a pressure of 1 bar. Determine the amount of work done during expansion.
