Find the change in length of the bar. Take E = 200 GPa.
5. A brass bar having cross sectional area of 500 mm2 is subjected to axial force as shown in figure.
100 kN 80 kN 50 kN 30 kN

Find the elongation of the bar. Take E = 80 GPa.
6. A brass bar 3 cm in dia and 30 cm long is subjected to tensile force of 15 kN. If the Poisson’s ratio is
0.23 and E = 150 GPa find the decrease in diameter.
7. Explain the following:
(i)Torsion (ii) Polar Moment of Inertia (iii) Power transmitted by a shaft.
8. A solid steel shaft is to transmit a torque of 10 kN-m. If the shearing stress is not to exceed 40 MPa,
find the minimum diameter of the shaft.
9. A solid shaft is subjected to a torque of 15 KN-m. Find the necessary dia. Of shaft, if the allowable shear
tress is 40 MPa. The allowable twist is 1 degree for every 20 diameter length of the shaft.
10. A solid circular shaft of 60 mm dia. Is transmitting 30 KW at 1440 rpm. Find the intensity of the induced
shear stress in the shaft.
11. The external and internal dia. of a hollow shaft are 40 cm and 20 cm. Find the maximum torque which
the shaft can transmit, if the angle of twist is not the exceed 2 degree in a length of 20 meters. Take
C=70 GPa.
12. A hollow shaft has an external dia Of 50 cm and internal dia of 300 mm the angle of twist for 200 mm
of its length is 1 degree. Find the maximum torque transmitted. Take C = 70 GPa.
13. Briefly explain rivets and riveted joints and bolted joints.

62. The value of specific heats at constant pressure and constant volume for a gas are 0.984 kJ/kg K and
0.728 kJ/kg K. Find the value of R and ratio of specific heats for the gas. If one kg of this gas is heated at
constant pressure from 250 C to 2000 C, estimate the heat added, ideal work done and change in
internal energy. Also calculate the pressure and the final volume, if the initial volume was 2 m 3.
63. A quantity of air has a volume of 0.4 m 3 at a pressure of 5 bar and a temperature of 800 C. It is
expanded isothermally to a pressure of 1 bar. Determine the amount of work done during expansion.
64. Explain I law of thermodynamic with the help of an example.
65. Explain Kelvin-Planck and Clausis statements of II law of thermodynamics.
66. With the help of PV and TS diagram, explain Carnot cycle.
