Sheet

The document contains 7 problems related to fluid mechanics. The problems cover topics like flow through a nozzle, flow in a hair dryer duct, fan sizing for computer cooling, fresh air requirements for a smoking lounge, flow in a pipe, oil pumping with a water jet pump, and laminar flow development in a pipe.

2nd Year Sheet (8)
Fluid Mechanics (I) 10-2021

1. Air enters a nozzle steadily at 2.21 kg/m3 and

2
30 m/s and leaves at 0.762 kg/m3 and 180
m/s. If the inlet area of the nozzle is 80 cm , determine (a) the mass flow rate through the
nozzle, and (b) the exit area of the nozzle. Answers: (a) 0.530 kg/s, (b) 38.7 cm2.

2. A hair dryer is basically a duct of constant diameter in which a few layers of electric
resistors are placed. A small fan pulls the air in and forces it through the resistors where it is
heated. If the density of air is 1.20 kg/m3 at the inlet and 1.05 kg/m3 at the exit, determine
the percent increase in the velocity of air as it flows through the dryer. Answer: 14%.

3. A desktop computer is to be cooled by a fan whose flow rate is 0.34 m3/min. Determine the
mass flow rate of air through the fan at an elevation of 3400 m where the air density is 0.7
kg/m3. Also, if the average velocity of air is not to exceed 110 m/min, determine the diameter
of the casing of the fan. Answers: 0.238 kg/min, 0.063 m.

4. A smoking lounge is to accommodate 15 heavy smokers. The minimum fresh air

requirement for smoking lounges is specified to be 30 L/s per person. Determine the
minimum required flow rate of fresh air that needs to be supplied to the lounge and the
diameter of the duct if the air velocity is not to exceed 8 m/s. Answers: 0.45 m3/s, 0.268m.

5. Air flows steadily between two cross sections in a long, straight section of 0.1-m inside-
diameter pipe. The static temperature and pressure at each section are as indicated in
Figure. If the average air velocity at section (1) is 205 m/s, determine the average air velocity
at section (2).

6. Oil having a specific gravity of 0.9 is pumped, as illustrated in Figure, with a water jet
pump. The water volume flow rate is 2 m3/s. The water and oil mixture has an
average specific gravity of 0.95. Calculate the rate, in m3/s at which the pump moves
oil.

7. Incompressible, laminar water flow develops in a straight pipe having radius R as

indicated in Figure. At section (1), the velocity profile is uniform; the velocity is equal
to a constant value U and is parallel to the pipe axis everywhere. At section (2), the
velocity profile is axi-symmetric and parabolic, with zero velocity at the pipe wall and
a maximum value of umax at the centerline. How are U and umax related? How are the
average velocity (V2) at section (2), and umax related?
