Course Description: This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of
digital systems and the design of digital circuits using Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. Topics covered include Boolean algebra, logic gates, combinational and sequential circuits, Students will learn how to design, simulate circuits using EDA tools. Learning Outcomes: Student will be able to: • Understand the fundamental concepts of digital systems • Apply Boolean algebra to design and analyze digital circuits • Design and analyze combinational and sequential circuits using EDA tools
Unit-1: Number systems (6 Lectures)
Decimal, Binary, Octal and Hexadecimal number systems, base conversions, signed and unsigned numbers, addition, subtraction by 2’s complement method.
Unit-2: Logic Gates and Boolean algebra (4 Lectures)
Truth Tables of OR, AND, NOT, NOR, NAND, XOR, XNOR, Universal Gates, Basic postulates and fundamental theorems of Boolean algebra.
Unit – 3 Combinational Logic Analysis and Design: (5 Lectures)
Standard representation of logic functions (SOP and POS), Minimization Techniques (Karnaugh map minimization up to 4 variables for SOP).
Unit – 4 Arithmetic Circuits: (3 Lectures)
Binary Addition. Half and Full Adder. Half and Full Subtractor
SR, D, and JK Flip-Flops. Ring Counter. Asynchronous counters, Decade Counter. Synchronous Counter.
Unit – 7 Introduction to eSim Simulator (4 Lectures)
Introduction, modules used in eSim – Eeschema, CvPcb, KiCad to Ngspice converter.
Unit – 8 Schematic Creation (12 Lectures)
eSim user interface, Model Editor, Subcircuit, Project Explorer, Familiarizing the Schematic Editor interface, eSim component libraries, Selection and placement of components, assigning values to components, Netlist generation, Tools for creating the PCB layout, PCB Layout.
