Practice Questions For Classical Physics

The document contains 10 physics problems involving calculations related to vectors, kinematics, forces, and work. Problem 1 asks for calculations of Earth's circumference, surface area, and volume given its radius. Problem 2 asks for calculations of average velocity, instantaneous velocities, and a graph of position vs. time for a particle moving along the x-axis. Problem 3 asks for calculations involving the vector sum of two vectors with given magnitudes and angles.

ASSIGNMENT #1

S1 ARE
Engineering Physics
Submission Date : 20-10-2023
1. Earth is approximately a sphere of radius 6.37 x 106 m. What are (a) its circumference in
kilometers, (b) its surface area in square kilometers, and (c) its volume in cubic kilometers?

2. The position of a particle moving along the x axis is given in centimeters by 𝑥 = 9.75 +
1.50 𝑡 3 ,where t is in seconds. Calculate (a) the average velocity during the time interval 𝑡 =
2.00 𝑠 to 𝑡 = 3.00 𝑠; (b) the instantaneous velocity at 𝑡 = 2.00 𝑠; (c) the instantaneous
velocity at 𝑡 = 3.00 𝑠; (d) the instantaneous velocity at 𝑡 = 2.50 𝑠; and (e) the instantaneous
velocity when the particle is midway between its positions at 𝑡 = 2.00 𝑠 and 𝑡 = 3.00 𝑠. (f)
Graph x versus t and indicate your answers graphically.

3. The two vectors 𝑎⃗ 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏⃗⃗ in Figure, have equal magnitudes of 10.0 m and the angles are
𝜃1 = 300 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜃2 = 1050 . Find the (a) x and y components of their vector sum 𝑟⃗, (b) the
magnitude of 𝑟⃗ , and (c) the angle 𝑟⃗ makes with the positive direction of the x axis.

4. A cart is propelled over an xy plane with acceleration components 𝑎𝑥 = 4.0 𝑚/𝑠 2 and 𝑎𝑦 =
−2.0 𝑚/𝑠 2 . Its initial velocity has components 𝑣0𝑥 = 8.0 𝑚/𝑠 and 𝑣0𝑦 = 12 𝑚/𝑠. In unit-
vector notation, what is the velocity of the cart when it reaches its greatest y coordinate?

5. The angular acceleration of a wheel is 𝛼 = 6.0t 4 − 4.0𝑡 2 with 𝛼 in radians per second-
squared and t in seconds. At time 𝑡 = 0, the wheel has an angular velocity of +2.0 rad/s and
an angular position of +1.0 rad. Write expressions for (a) the angular velocity (rad/s) and (b)
the angular position (rad) as functions of time (s).

6. A 2.00 kg particle has the xy coordinates (-1.20 m, 0.500 m), and a 4.00 kg particle has the
xy coordinates (0.600 m, -0.750 m). Both lie on a horizontal plane. At what (a) x and (b) y
coordinates must you place a 3.00 kg particle such that the center of mass of the three-
particle system has the coordinates (-0.500 m, -0.700 m)?

7. The body in Figure is pivoted at O, and two forces act on it as shown. If 𝑟1 = 3.30 𝑚,
𝑟2 = 5.15 𝑚, 𝐹1 = 3.2 𝑁 𝐹2 = 6.90 𝑁 𝜃1 = 55.00 and 𝜃2 = 30.00 what is the net torque
about the pivot?
8. A 10 g bullet moving directly upward at 1000 m/s strikes and passes through the center of
mass of a 5.0 kg block initially at rest. The bullet emerges from the block moving directly
upward at 400 m/s. To what maximum height does the block then rise above its initial
position?
9. A machine carries a 4.0 kg package from an initial position of 𝑑𝑖 = 0.5 𝑚𝑖̂ + 0.75 𝑚𝑗̂ +
0.2 𝑚𝑘̂ at 𝑡 = 0 to a final position of 𝑑𝑓 = 7.5 𝑚𝑖̂ + 12.0 𝑚𝑗̂ + 7.2 𝑚𝑘̂ 𝑡 = 12 𝑠 The
constant force applied by the machine on the package is 𝐹 = 2.0 𝑁𝑖̂ + 4.0 𝑁𝑗̂ + 6.0 𝑁𝑘̂
For that displacement, find (a) the work done on the package by the machine’s force and
(b) the average power of the machine’s force on the package.

10. Figure shows an overhead view of three horizontal forces acting on a cargo canister that was
initially stationary but now moves across a frictionless floor. The force magnitudes are 𝐹1 =
3.00 𝑁, 𝐹2 = 4.00 𝑁, and 𝐹3 = 10.0 𝑁, and the indicated angles are 𝜃2 = 50.00 and 𝜃3 =
35.00 . What is the net work done on the canister by the three forces during the first 4.00 m
of displacement?
