Interview answer: What does knowing 8 million kids each year disappear make you feel?
Why?
Kidnapping is the illegal detention or transportation of a person against their will. In January
2023, 555 people across the 42 states were missing, of which 284 cases were closed.
This crime has serious physical and psychological effects on the victim's family. Child
kidnapping, which targets the most vulnerable, is particularly alarming. But kidnapping can
happen to adults too.
Interview answer: do you think everyone should be aware of kidnapping and human

Interview answer: do you think by the age of 2, a child should have an online presence?
Why or why not?
People are kidnapped for a variety of reasons. The vast majority of kidnaps are carried out by
criminal groups motivated by financial gain. However, terrorist groups also use kidnapping as a
tactic. They usually have a broader agenda and might be looking for money, the exchange of
prisoners, a change in policy or to gain propaganda. The motives vary from group to group,
place to place and over time.
Interview answer: Do you think all states should take kidnapping seriously and set up
more laws and penalties than are set up now? Why or why not?
Script for News Segment:
Some state laws separate kidnapping into offenses of different degrees or levels of severity. For
example, a charge of first degree kidnapping, sometimes known as aggravated kidnapping,
might involve a case where the accused physically harmed, sexually assaulted, or exposed the
victim to serious risk of harm during the course of kidnapping. When no aggravating factors are
involved, the offense might be referred to as simple kidnapping or second- or third degree
kidnapping.
Interview answer: do you think all types of kidnapping should be taken just as seriously
as any other or not diminished just because it’s a less severe type of kidnapping? Why
or why not?
1. Run away and find help. Look for a crowded public area as soon as you think you’re in
trouble. The moment you think someone is approaching you to abduct you, take a quick
look around. Scan the area and look for a busy street, a large group of people, or a
business that looks fairly crowded.
2. Fight the attacker off. Do not fight if the kidnapper has a weapon and if you’re cornered.
If the attacker has a gun or knife and you really have nowhere to go, try to relax and
comply with the kidnapper.
3. If you are taken, maintain eye contact with the attacker whenever they talk to you. This
can subconsciously remind the kidnapper of your humanity and drastically reduce the
odds that your attacker harms you.
4. Try to drop your wallet, ID, or some personal item at the spot your taken.
5. Poke or jab them in their eyes if they get close enough. If you have quick access to their
eyes, make a v-shape with your finger and stick them in their eyes as hard as you can. If
you can blind your attacker, it will give you plenty of time to run away.
6. Stay vigilant while you’re out to spot suspicious people. When you’re out and about,
keep your eyes out for people that may be following you or studying your movements.
7. Stay in well-lit places. Take routes along busy roads and stay out of alleys and smaller
side streets.
8. Avoid staring at your phone while you're walking around and don’t wear headphones
while you're out to keep your eyes open. If a potential kidnapper sess you notice them,
they’re less likely to attack.
