1 Develop Phonemic Awareness (5 mins)

Ask students to listen carefully as you say a word. Students should replace the first sound of the word
with /m/ and say the new word they formed. For example:
Teacher: sat Teacher: ten
Students: mat Students: men
Continue with the following words. Say:
had (mad) top (mop) ten (men) such (much)
Ask students to listen carefully as you say the individual sounds of a word. Students will then blend the
sounds to say the whole word.
Teacher: /k/ /a/ /p/ Teacher: /pl/ /ā/
Students: cap Students: play
Continue the activity with the following words. Say:
/b/ /a/ /k/ (back)
/kl/ /a/ /p/ (clap)
/bl/ /a/ /k/ (black)

Review r-blends with students. Write brick, drum, trick, and grin on the board. Say each word and have
students repeat it. Explain that these words have r-blends. An r-blend is a consonant followed by the
letter r. Ask volunteers to circle the r-blends br, dr, tr, and gr in each word. Ask students to suggest other
words that have r-blends. Write these words on the board.
Repeat the activity for the l-blends pl, bl, cl, and fl. You can use the words plug, black, clip, and flag
as examples.

3 Read the Chapters (15 mins)

Read the title, The Puppet Club. Remind students that they have already read chapters 1 and 2. Today
they will read chapters 3 and 4. Allow students to look at pages 14–22 to help them make predictions.
Ask: What do you think these chapters will be about?
Read chapters 3 and 4. Have volunteers read aloud one paragraph at a time. Discuss items of interest on
each page. Ask students to indicate if they do not understand something in the story. Pause and clarify
as necessary. Encourage students to listen for the different blends as they listen to the story.
• p. 14 Ask: What was Beth’s idea for what should happen after all the characters go to sleep?
(They dream.)
• p. 19 Ask: What is the title of The Puppet Club’s next script? (Bake a Cake)
• p. 20 Point out the word would. Ask students to read it aloud, and then have a volunteer spell it.
• p. 21 Point out the word many. Ask students to read it aloud, and then have a volunteer spell it.
Ask: Why did Bug say, “That’s not nice!”? (Frog wanted a bug on the cake so he could eat it.)
• p. 22 Ask: What does “He eats like a bird” mean? (Bird is actually a bird, and therefore he eats like
a bird, but also the saying “eats like a bird” means “eats very little.”)

After Reading
Encourage students to share their reactions to the chapters read and to say what the chapters add to
the story. Ask:
• Do you like the last script The Puppet Club wrote? Why or why not?
• What could be an alternative title for the script?
• Do you think The Puppet Club will write more scripts?
• What do you think might happen next?

4 Optional Extension Activity

In small groups, have students write short scripts of their own using the animal puppets from the reader as
characters. If time allows, students can perform these plays for the class.
