Data and Results Exp-5 6

The document is an entry form for an experiment estimating the amount of copper in a solution using iodometric titration. [1] It details the standardization of a sodium thiosulfate solution against a potassium dichromate solution. [2] Titrations were performed on samples of a copper salt solution with the standardized thiosulfate solution. [3] Calculations determined the amount of copper in the original 500mL copper salt solution to be 1.59g, with a percentage error of -35.803% compared to the known value of 1.01794g.

Data and Results Entry Form-5&6

EXP.5&6: ESTIMATION OF COPPER (Cu) CONTAINED IN A SUPPLIED SOLUTION OF COPPER SALT BY

IODOMETRIC METHOD.

Name: ___________________________________, ID: _____________________, Section: _________

EXPERIMENTAL DATA:

(A) Standardize sodium thiosulphate solution as Expt. No. 5.

Table-1: Standardization of supplied Na2S2O3 solution against standard K2Cr2O7 solution by oxidation-
reduction titration.
Vol. of Vol. of Na2S2O3
No. of (burette reading) (in mL)
K2Cr2O7 Mean (in mL)
reading
(in mL) Initial Final Difference
1 10 0.00 10.30 10.30 10.25
2 10 10.30 20.50 10.20

0.74 × 0.1
0.49
The strength of K2Cr2O7 solution = (N) = 0.1510204 N

The strength of supplied Na2S2O3 solution (S): Vthio x Nthio = Vdichromate x Ndichromate
10.25 x 10 x 0.1510204
Vthio = 0.147337 N

(B) Estimation of Cu ions:

Table-2: Determination of the amount of copper in a supplied solution of blue vitriol by iodometric
method.
Vol. of Na2S2O3
No. of Vol. of Copper salt Mean (in mL)
(burette reading) (in mL)
reading solution (in mL) (V)
Initial Final Difference
1 10 0.00 3.50 3.5 3.3875
2 10 3.50 6.80 3.3
3 10 6.80 10.20 3.4
4 10 10.20 13.55 3.35
CALCULATIONS: 2 CuSO4 º I2 º 2 Na2S2O3
1 ml 1N Na2S2O3 º 0.06354 gm of Cu2+

Amount of copper ions in 10 mL of copper salt solution = 0.06354 × 3.3875 × 0.147337 gm

= 0.3171307 gm

Amount of copper ions in 500 mL of copper salt solution = 0.06354 × 3.3875 ×0.147337 × 50 gm
=1.5856537 gm

Observe value of Cu2+ (in 500mL solution) = 1.5856537 gm

Known value of Cu2+ (in 500mL solution) = (63.54*4)/249.68 =1.01794 gm

RESULTS:

The amount of copper ions in 500 mL of copper salt solution is 1.59 gm

PERCENTAGE OF ERROR:
Known value−Observed value
¿ 100 = [(1.01794-1.5856537 )/1.5856537]*100
Known value
=-35.803 %
